America’s most celebrated novelist releases her 10th book today; simply entitled Home!
Toni Morrison‘s novels are known for their epic themes, vivid dialogue and richly detailed charaters. Among her best known novels are The Bluest Eye, Sula, Song of Solomon and Beloved. She’s won a Nobel Prize (first black woman to receive this honor) and a Pulitzer Prize for her work in which she examines the lives of black characters who struggle with identity amidst racism and hostility. Morrison is also one of 13 recipients of this year’s Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor.
Morrison’s new novel, Home, is a brief, poetic story of Frank Money, a traumatized Korean War veteran who returns to the states in the 1950s. Morrison has long used fiction as a private and alternative history, whether the Civil War (“Beloved”), the 1920s (“Jazz”) or colonial times (“A Mercy”). With Home, she wanted to add some truth – about war, about racism – to the standard `50s narrative.
Like Beloved, Song of Solomon and other Morrison novels, her new book Home is a journey and a reckoning. It’s a tale of redemption: a tortured story about one man’s desperate search for himself in a world that’s disfigured by war. It’s a deeply moving novel about an apparently defeated man finding his manhood–and his home.
