‘Black Music Honors’ to salute Xscape, Yolanda Adams and more

Chicago based television production company Central City Productions announces the 2019 Black Music Honors television taping set to take place on Thursday, September 5th at The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, GA. During this star-studded two-hour television special, Central City Productions (CCP) will honor artists and musicians who have influenced and made significant contributions to American music.

The honorees for this year’s Black Music Honors include Xscape who will receive the Urban Music Icon Award for the platinum selling quartet group’s 25 years in the industry. Yolanda Adams will receive the Gospel Music Icon Award. Culturally-conscience eclectic group, Arrested Development and chart-topping crooner, Freddie Jackson, whose career has spanned over 33 years, will also be honored.

“The vision behind the Black Music Honors is to recognize the trailblazers in African American music who have paved the way for the artists of today. Many of these artists have never received their much-deserved recognition,” stated Founder and Executive Producer, Don Jackson.

Television and radio personality Rickey Smiley and Grammy® Award-winner and actress LeToya Luckett return as co-hosts of the show, which is set to air in broadcast syndication Sept. 14 – October 20, 2019. State Farm returns as the show’s title sponsor.

The epic event will be held at The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre located at 2800 Cobb Galleria Pkwy, Atlanta, GA 30339. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the show taping at 7 p.m.

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey hosted a special Super Soul Gospel Brunch at her Montecito, CA home yesterday in celebration of her new book, The Wisdom of Sunday: Life-Changing Insights from Super Soul Conversations.

The book will be released tomorrow (Tuesday, October 17) and features personal essays from Ms. Winfrey and aha moments from thought-leaders who have appeared on her Emmy-winning OWN series, “Super Soul Sunday.” Such amazing words of wisdom will come from Gary Zukav, Shonda Rhimes, Devon Franklin, Brene Brown, President Jimmy Carter, Eckhart Tolle, Tony Robbins, Deepak Chopra and many more.

The Super Soul Gospel Brunch included performances by BeBe Winans, Donald Lawrence, Common, Andra Day and Erica Campbell.  Invited celebrities included Yolanda Adams, Cynthia Erivo, Sterling K. Brown and his wife Ryan Michelle, Niecy Nash, Angela Bassett, DeVon Franklin and wife Meagen Good and many more!

BET honors The Obamas with Musical Celebration feat. Usher, Jill Scott and more!

Not sure how I missed this but BET Networks saluted the First Family (President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama) last night during a musical celebration at the White House. The event was hosted by Terence J and Regina Hall, and featured performances by Usher, Jill Scott, Common, The Roots, Bell Biv DeVoe, Busta Rhymes, Janelle Monáe, De La Soul, Yolanda Adams, Michelle Williams and KiKi Sheard along with appearances by Samuel L. Jackson, Jesse Williams and Angela Bassett.

“Our country has been led for the past eight years by an extraordinary president and first lady,” said Debra Lee, Chairman and CEO, BET Networks. “We have all witnessed history in the making and I am humbled by this momentous opportunity for BET Networks to join the Obamas for this musical celebration.”

The concert special will premiere on BET Tuesday, November 15 at 9:00 P.M. ET/PT.

BMI R&B HIP HOP Awards honors Toni Braxton and others [PHOTOS]

Multi-Grammy winning singer-songwriter Toni Braxton was all smiles last night on the red carpet of BMI R&B Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta, GA. The “Un-Break My Heart” vocalist was honored with this year’s coveted President’s Award for her 25 years in the entertainment industry. Other honorees included fellow Atlantan Christopher “Ludacris” Bridges and  The annual award ceremony recognizes the songwriters and publishers of the year’s most-performed R&B/hip-hop songs during the 2016 and took place at the prestigious Symphony Hall of The Woodruff Art Center.

IMG_5773Joining Braxton on the red carpet were her famous sisters—-Trina, Towanda and Traci—along with her not so little sons, Denim and Diezel. Her mother, father and brother were also in attendance while Tamar Braxton and Toni’s boyfriend, Birdman, joined them inside the auditorium.

The show was hosted by comedian Chris Tucker alongside BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and BMI Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations in Atlanta, Catherine Brewton and featured performances by some of the hottest talent in the music industry. Hip-hop heavyweight and mega producer DJ Khaled kicked off the show with his smash hit “All I Do Is Win” featuring Ludacris. Kent Jones, one of the year’s most buzzed about new artists, lived up to the hype when he rocked the mic with his smash single “Don’t Mind.” The momentum kept building when Rich Homie Quan hit the stage to perform his recent singles, “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” while Rae Sremmurd got the crowd moving with “No Type” and brand new single, “Black Beatles.”

IMG_5229The second half of the evening included an array of outstanding tribute performances honoring Toni Braxton beginning with Donald Lawrence & Company performing “You Mean the World to Me” and vocal powerhouse Yolanda Adams received a standing ovation with her moving rendition of “Un-Break My Heart.” Three of the Braxton sisters, Towanda, Traci, and Trina paid homage to their sister showcasing their incredible talent on “Breathe Again” and R&B chanteuse Ledisi wowed the audience with “Seven Whole Days.” After a moving introduction by L.A. Reid, Ms. Braxton took center stage for a spectacular performance of fan favorite, “He Wasn’t Man Enough” with her sisters on backing vocals.
Throughout the evening, the 35 best-performing R&B/Hip-Hop songs in the U.S. from BMI’s repertoire of over 10.5 million musical works were named along with Top Producers Awards going to Ben “Billions” Diehl and Southside. Top honors went to Charlie Puth and Wiz Khalifa for “See You Again” which claimed Song of the Year, Universal Music Publishing Group took home Publisher of the Year, and Metro Boomin was awarded Producer of the Year.

EMMY-winning television host and radio star Steve Harvey recently hosted the 2016 State Farm Neighborhood Awards show in Las Vegas, at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The show was produced, for the 14th year in a row, by EMMY-winning television/film/radio producer Rushion McDonald and featured side-splitting laughs, inspiring speeches of celebration, singing, an impromptu dance party, and more. This year’s event featured a bevy of musical superstars including Maxwell, The O’Jays, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, which had the sold-out crowd cheering and dancing.

Some of Gospel music’s biggest stars attended the BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Honors Saturday night in Atlanta, GA. The lavish ceremony was held at the historic Rialto Performing Arts Center at Georgia State and featured an all-star salute to sibling acts Mary Mary and music legends BeBe and CeCe Winans. The evening was hosted by Sunday Best judge and radio personality Yolanda Adams and will air on TV One February 19 at 8 p.m. EST.

The evening began with a dazzling red carpet and then a pre-show where BMI recognized the most played songs of 2015 and their songwriters. Multi-talented entertainer Taraji P. Henson returns as host of BET’s highly rated Celebration of Gospel. The Empire star is back for another year of foot stomping, toe-tapping, and hand clapping music as the best of gospel, R&B and hip-hop collide for one explosive night of television.

“I am thrilled to return to BET’s Celebration of Gospel. It is truly a celebration of the best in music with love and hope. A celebration of what brings us all together and reminds us of what is important,” said Taraji P. Henson.

This year’s telecast will feature soul-stirring performances by Pastor Shirley Caesar, Chaka Khan, and Gladys Knight along with contemporary artists Yolanda Adams, Eric Campbell, Tamela Mann, Tasha Cobbs and Preachers of Atlanta and Sunday Best alum Le’Andria Johnson.

The UNCF An Evening of Stars program was taped Sunday at the beautiful Atlanta Civic Center. The annual fundraiser, which provides scholarship dollars for over 60,000 students attending historically black colleges and universities, was met with much fanfare and delight.

The evening was hosted once again by “black-ish” star and executive producer, Anthony Anderson and included special appearances by “Furious 7” star Chris “Ludacris” Bridges; Grammy winning-singer, Ne-Yo; hip-hop mogul, Jermaine Dupri; “Empire” stars Grace Gealey and Trai Byers; RHOA beauty, Claudia Jordan; Actress and HBCU alum, Keshia Knight-Pulliam; “Devious Maids” actress Dania Ramirez; Comedian, Jonathan Slocumb; New Edition member, Ronnie Devoe; “Being Mary Jane” actor, Thomas Q. Jones; R&B songstress Tamia with her former NBA player husband, Grant Hill and Diesel Braxton, son of Toni Braxton.

Other invited guests included Princess Monique, Demetria McKinney, Roger M. Bobb, Mona Scott-Young and Trina & Towanda Braxton. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed made a special presentation on behalf of Usher’s New Look Foundation as well as Carolyn Williams, mother of Pharrell Williams.  She represented her son who provided a scholarship on behalf of his foundation, From One Hand to Another.

Performers included rapper, Big Sean along with the Miles College Choir; R&B maestro, KEM; country music sensation, Mickey Guyton; R&B vixen and HBCU alum, K. Michelle; Grammy legends, Toni Braxton with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds; and R&B icons, Morris Day and the Time, who closed out the show with a medley of their hits.

Must see performances included Yolanda Adams singing the Mahalia Jackson classic, “How I Got Over” with the Talladega College Choir as well as Jussie Smollett and Estelle’s duet of  “Conqueror.”  Other incredible highlights were the heartfelt personal stories from this year’s Target Rising Star Students including the first ever award’s presentation to autistic student, Terrance Brice. He received $10,000 from Braxton’s Autism Foundation.

Kevin Hart, Chris Paul, Pharrell Williams and Usher will make special taped appearances on the show, which has been the hallmark of African-American superstars supporting education for 36 years.

Also joining the show to present will be stars of television, film and music including Ludacris, Trai Byers, Jermaine Dupri, Grace Gealey, Dania Ramirez, Tamia and Grant Hill and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. They join the show’s host Anthony Anderson and previously announced performers K. Michelle, Yolanda Adams and Estelle featuring Jussie Smollett.

And, joining Yolanda Adams on stage to perform the gospel anthem “How I Got Over” will be the Talladega College Choir.

‘Bobby Jones Gospel’ returns for its 34th Season #amen

The longest running original series on cable television, “BOBBY JONES GOSPEL,” premieres its 34th season on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at 9:00 A.M.  Gospel star Kirk Franklin will participate as co-host alongside Dr. Bobby Jones in the premiere episode.

The season premiere episode will showcase organist Dove and Stellar Award nominee Vicki Yohe, organist Moses Tyson and Twinkie Clark pianist and member of GRAMMY® Award winning group The Clark sisters, Dr. J & NSC featuring family quartet The Walls Group and previous “Sunday Best” winner Tasha Page Lockhart.

Tune in every Sunday morning for joyous performances and riveting interviews from gospel music’s most talented entertainers, choirs, evangelists, and others.  Guests include Hezekiah Walker, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Tye Tribbett, Yolanda Adams, LeAndria Johnson, Byron Cage, Dorinda Clark Cole, Donald Lawrence, Tamela Mann, James Fortune & FIYA, the Howard University Gospel Choir just to name a few.

GMHM’s ‘Evolution of Gospel’ to salute Yolanda Adams and Kirk Franklin

The Gospel Music Heritage Month Foundation is proud to announce that UP will sponsor and help promote the annual “Evolution of Gospel” celebration at The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.  The sixth annual event commemorates the month of September as Gospel Music Heritage Month (GMHM) and features scintillating performances and special tributes.

This year’s honorees include Gospel music legends Yolanda Adams and Kirk Franklin, and former Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, who, along with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), was instrumental in the passage of the resolution that established Gospel Music Heritage Month.

kirk franklin 23.jpg 78This awards event will be held on September 15, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. ET and will be produced by Ernest Walker of Walker Entertainment Group, Houston, TX.  Musical tributes will be rendered by some of the most anointed Gospel vocalists including Kathy Taylor, Edwin Hawkins, Dottie Peoples, Stephen Hurd and Sunday Best Winner, Tasha Page Lockhart, among others.

Charles Humbard, CEO of UP and who was instrumental in the creation of GMHM, said, “No other music uplifts like gospel music.  It is a part of the fabric of America and our heritage at UP and we are pleased to be a part of this terrific celebration.”

Previous honorees of the Evolution of Gospel event, include Gospel icons and trailblazers Dr. Bobby Jones (Bobby Jones Gospel); Cathy Hughes (Radio One); Charley Humbard (UP TV); Don Jackson (Stellar Awards); Congressman John Lewis, who was honored as a salute to the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington; and Gospel icon Richard Smallwood, along with Bill Hearn of Capital Music Group for their major contributions to the legacy of Gospel music.
