Mary J. Blige to receive a star on the ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Grammy-winning singer and rising actress Mary J. Blige will be receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this coming Thursday, January 11.

According to the official press release, Blige will be honored with the 2,626th star and her ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. PST on 6201 Hollywood Boulevard in front of Eastown. Sean “Diddy” Combs will be there to help emcee and unveil the star along with Hollywood Chamber President and CEO Leron Gubler.

“Mary J. Blige is one of the most popular singers of our generation. Fans will be thrilled to see her star on the Boulevard as her career milestones are celebrated on this very famous sidewalk,” stated Ana Martinez, Producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies.

Mary J. Blige is a multi-platinum selling artist with nine Grammy® Awards. She is one of the pioneers of the 90s “hip hop/soul” sound and has sold more than 50 million records worldwide. She is an icon and arguably one of the most recognizable singers in the music business.

2018 is already shaping up to be a big year for her professionally as she is up for a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and Critic’s Choice Award for her work in Dee ReesMudbound. She is a nominee in the “Best Supporting Actress” category.

I got a chance to meet Mary back in 2009 when she teamed up with Outkast star Big Boi as part of the Bringing Hope Home Tour – a foreclosing prevention program for homeowners here in Atlanta. She was so personable and very kind. At the time she was prepping to star as Nina Simone in a biopic and we talked about her new found passion for acting and Simone’s legendary music catalogue. Blige is very deserving of this star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

What is your favorite Mary J. Blige song?

2018 Pirelli Calendar features an all-Black cast for retelling of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ [PHOTOS]

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Emmy winning drag superstar RuPaul Charles is just one of the many famous faces attached to the new 2018 Pirelli Calendar. Images surfaced over the weekend featuring the “Drag Race” star as the demanding Queen of Hearts in this all-Black retelling of the classic children’s book, Alice in Wonderland.

The Pirelli Calendar is one of the entertainment world’s most sought after items.  According to CNN, it is not sold to the public and is gifted to celebrities and an elite group of industry insiders only. It was created years ago to display the beauty of women but has taken a more socially conscious approach to its calendar and photos in recent years.

“Now we have Alice looking different. Alice can be anyone. It’s an essence… you don’t have to be confined. Focus on what it represents. It’s important for cultural development,” said the calendar’s photographer Tim Walker.

In addition to Charles, the calendar also features some pretty magical and whimsical images of Oscar winners Whoopi Goldberg and Lupita Nyong’o, supermodel Naomi Cambell, hip hop icon Sean “Diddy” Combs, acclaimed model and actor Djimon Hounsou and rap sensation Lil Yachty + a cadre of high fashion models from around the motherland. British Vogue editor Edward Enninful is also assisting Walker with the fabulous fashion spread.

Diddy talks music, health, Cassie & more with Wendy Williams (VIDEO)

Written by | Ray Cornelius

And they said this day would never happen…

It was all about love and forgiveness this morning on “The Wendy Williams Show” as music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs talked one-on-one with Wendy about his career as well as his new film “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop.”

If you know their history, these two haven’t always been the best of friends and have been “allegedly” (fingers in quotes) feuding for years. But it appears that they have put all that drama behind them and were able to (as Wendy called it) have an adult conversation.  But before they got into it, Diddy offered Wendy a praise apology.

“I must say, it’s been a long time coming and I want to just tell you how proud I am of you. I don’t think you get enough credit for being the first one to really cover our culture, hip hop culture, also hip hop celebrities and just understanding that it’s news. Not to say that’s all you cover but you started shedding light on our culture and our people and thank you very much,” said Combs to Wendy.

Wendy accepted his compliment and admitted that she may have pissed off a lot of people earlier in her career and that their interview today was indeed a “full circle moment.”

Check out the conversation below where Puff also talks about aging, being proactive about his health, being in love with Cassie, his new charter school and Biggie:

Diddy debuts ‘Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop’ at TFF; also avail. on AppleMusic 6/25 (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has released a new documentary about his career and iconic record label, Bad Boy. “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: A Bad Boy Story” premiered Friday night at the Tribeca Film Festival and will play two more times this weekend in NYC.

In 1993, Sean “Diddy” Combs, aka Puff Daddy, founded Bad Boy Records, and in 2016, the Bad Boy Family reunited for the biggest homecoming in hip-hop history. Director Daniel Kaufman and Live Nation Productions share this raw and exclusive look behind the scenes at the history and legacy of Bad Boy through a complex portrait of the label’s mastermind, Sean “Puffy” Combs, as he reunites his Bad Boy Family over the course of a frantic three week rehearsal period. As the biggest names of Bad Boy prepare to reunite, the film also looks back to trace the label’s emergence in Harlem and Brooklyn, it’s meteoric rise, the tragic killing of Biggie Smalls, and the lasting influence on music, fashion, marketing and culture- all while revealing the love and commitment that form the bonds between the Bad Boy family. This celebratory documentary culminates in the 2016 live performances at Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center featuring iconic artists PUFF DADDY, LIL’ KIM, MASE, FAITH EVANS, MARIO WINANS, 112, TOTAL, CARL THOMAS, and THE LOX. It will also be made available to his fan on Apple Music beginning June 25.

V-103 hosts Mary J. Blige Listening Party for ‘Strength of a Woman’

Written by | Ray Cornelius

The reigning “Queen of Hip Hop Soul” Mary J. Blige teamed up with Atlanta’s Big Station, V-103 Wednesday night for a sneak peek of her new CD, Strength of a Woman + her new film, “The Making of Strength of a Woman.”  The album drops this Friday, April 28 and the film debuts on Tuesday, May 2 at 11 p.m. EST on VH1.

The invitation only event took place at the SCADshow in Midtown and was hosted by Big Tigger. The evening began with the documentary which delves into the creative process of the new album. If you’re a real Blige fan, then you’ll know that she is going through a very painful divorce right now from her husband, Kendu Isaacs and much of the project is about her picking up the pieces and moving forward. Fans will see her laugh and cry in the studio as well motivate the songwriters, artists and engineers that helped her shape this new sound. It is narrated by Sean “Diddy” Combs and features a number of guest appearances by many of her collaborators and close friends like Missy Elliott, Jazmine Sullivan, DJ Khaled and Teddy Riley. For Blige, working with these award winning musicians and artists was as much of an honor for her as it was for them.

“It really meant so much to me because I really wanted to work with them. Like, I really wanted to work with Jazmine. I really wanted to write with her. I really love Khaled. He’s so positive and is such a role model. Kayne has always been a positive role model. Many of us are in the public and sometimes you wanna knock somebody out or curse somebody out and he does what we think about doing. (LOL) But seriously, I have always wanted to work with him because he’s a genius and he’s so real and expressive. Missy is my friend. She’s been my friend since the beginning of all of this,” said Blige to host Big Tigger.

Strength of a Woman also includes a track produced by ATL’s own Ne-Yo. In the film, Blige asked him about whether a certain female artist worked in his studio and warned him about not letting her know that he was working on this new album. Apparently this “mystery” artist is the alleged “side chick” of her husband and the one who is responsible for their divorce. Blige refers to her as “My Becky with the good hair,” a term used and made popular by Beyoncé’s Lemonade. Believe me when I tell you the audience “went up” over Blige’s comment and caused everyone to wonder who she is.

In addition to discussing the new album, Blige also talked to Big Tigger about some of the lessons she has learned over her 25 year career and the one thing that has changed the most for her professionally and privately.

“My self-esteem,” said Blige to a thunderous applause.  “Me being able to sit here and keep my head up and not worry about whether I am stumbling and mumbling and all of that. I just accept it and try not fix it…I am not trying to be perfect but trying to be the best me that I can be. I’ve never felt like this before.”

SIDE NOTE: For fans who are desiring that “old Mary” sound (you know what I’m talking about), I believe you will be satisfied with her new album. It features a number of songs that I believe are reminiscent (no pun intended) to the music featured on her classic My Life album. The title track, “Strength of a Woman,” is a clear stand out to me not only because it was produced by Teddy Riley and Benjamin Wright Jr. but it also features Blige with a live orchestra. That’s a rare sound that you just don’t hear that often on the radio anymore and it reminds me of a golden age of music.
