First Look Images of Jamie Foxx + Michael B. Jordan in ‘JUST MERCY’ [PHOTOS]

Warner Bros. has released new “first look” images from Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx‘s upcoming drama JUST MERCY. It opens in theaters on January 10, 2020.

As previously recorded, JUST MERCY follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice.  After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs.  Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Brie Larson).  One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie.  In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds—and the system—stacked against them.

JUST MERCY also stars O’Shea Jackson Jr., Rafe Spall, Tim Blake Nelson and Rob Morgan.

Ice Cube, Dr. Dre & ‘Straight Outta Compton’ cast cover THR (PHOTOS + VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Original members of N.W.A, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre and the cast leads of Straight Outta Compton cover the newest issue of The Hollywood Reporter. Inside the two rap icons talk about the making of the movie, their musical legacy and more. Check out photos and excerpts from the interview as well as an exclusive look at the film’s stars—Jason Mitchell (Eazy-E), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Ice Cube), and Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre).

Cube and Dre

“We were just trying to entertain our neighborhood, just us trying to be hood stars,” says Dr. Dre. “It just became something that was much, much bigger than we ever thought, than I ever imagined.”

Cube

“It was always about free speech, being able to express yourself, whether people like it or not,” recalls Cube of N.W.A’s early raps (the group made four albums before they broke up in 1991). “That’s the great thing about being in this country, is to be able to speak your mind and not be censored.”

Dre

“Our legacy is something that’s very important to me,” says Dr. Dre

Ice Cube and his son

“My father would call me before each scene to let me know what he was thinking. A lot of it was getting me to not act. I have so much of his mannerisms and things already in me that I wouldn’t want to be onscreen doing an impersonation. You can do an impersonation or you could become the character. I really was trying to break down those acting walls and just let everything flow,” says O’Shea Jackson Jr.

lead actor

“This movie will keep shining a light on the problem, especially because of all the situations that are happening in Ferguson and here in Los Angeles. It’s definitely going to keep this situation in people’s minds and make sure that everyone out there knows that this is a problem that keeps happening still today,” says Dr. Dre.

New Poster for ‘Straight Outta Compton’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Check out the new and final poster for the upcoming NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton. The film stars Jason Mitchell (Eazy-E), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Ice Cube), Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre), Aldis Hodge (MC Ren) and Neil Brown Jr. (DJ Yella).

In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music.  Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels—armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent—stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.A.  And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today.

Straight Outta Compton  also stars Marlon Yates Jr as The D.O.C, Paul Giamatti as Jerry Heller and Keith Stanfield as Snoop Dogg. The film is directed by F. Gary Gray and produced by Ice Cube, Tomica Woods-Wright, and Dr. Dre. It is also being executive produced by Will Packer.

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

The other day, we posted photos of the lead actors for Universal Pictures upcoming biopic, Straight Outta Compton.  Well, Wednesday morning real  N.W.A members, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre tweeted the above photo of them with the principle actors and the film’s director, F. Gary Gray.  However, there has been a slight change.

The actor who we reported as playing Dr. Dre is not Marcus Callendar but is now Corey Hawkins.  Actor Jason Mitchell is still on board as N.W.A founder, Eazy-E as is O’Shea Jackson Jr. on board to play his father, Ice Cube.

We’ve also learned that the film will debut next summer on August 14, 2015 and it is being executive produced by Will ‘Power’ Packer alongside F. Gary Gray.

Check out the film’s new synopsis:

CASTING UPDATE: Leads actors chosen for NWA Biopic (PHOTOS)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

After numerous auditions and tons of callbacks, casting for the three principal roles in the upcoming NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton  is complete and we have pictures of the actors who will be playing the iconic music stars.

dreFirst up is Jason Mitchell (pictured above) who will be playing the rap group’s founder, Easy E. Reportedly the actor has starred in four films including Contraband  with Mark Wahlberg. If you recall, the deceased rapper’s son and daughter expressed interested in playing their father. However, Mitchell has come out the victor.

Next up is Marcus Callendar (pictured left), who has been cast in the role of Dr. Dre.  Reported, Dre initially wanted Fruitvale Station  actor Michael B. Jordan to portray him in the film. However, Jordan’s commitment to The Fantastic Four  presented itself a scheduling conflict.

Last but not least is O’Shea Jackson, Jr. who will take on the role of his father, Ice Cube. This will be Jackson’s first major role and apparently was Cube’s top pick even though it was stated that children of the rappers would not receive any preferential treatment and would have to earn their roles.

Cube23Casting for NWA’s two other members, MC Ren and DJ Yella, have yet to be announced.

Straight Outta Compton  is being directed by F. Gary Gray and will chronicle the rise of the influential hip hop group from Los Angeles. NWA endured controversy due to the explicit nature of their lyrics, and was subsequently banned from many mainstream U.S. radio stations.  In spite of this, NWA has sold over 10 million CD units in the U.S. alone and is credited as the most important group in the history of hip hop/pioneers of gangsta rap.

Stay tuned as more casting news develops!
