JUST BECUZ…

Written by | Ray Cornelius

I had the pleasure of attending the “unofficial” afterparty for Janet Jackson‘s “State of the World Tour” that ended in Atlanta, GA this past Sunday night. The super fan experience took place at Atlanta’s Suite Food Lounge and included appearances by some of Janet’s dancers and band members including acclaimed drummer Lil John Roberts. There were also appearances by “Queen Sugar” star and Atlanta native Omar Dorsey and versatile actor Anthony Mackie.

Roberts is a music veteran that has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry including Janet and her brother Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder and the list goes on and on. I had a chance to interview him over the summer on #UPFRONT where we talk extensively about his amazing career and how he got started in music.

Other Atlanta notables in attendance included model and entrepreneur A Lady Named Pearl and singers Carmen Rodgers and Kameron Corvet.

Emmy® Award-winning casting director and talent executive Robi Reed, Founder of The Reed For Hope Foundation (RFHF), recently presented her 14th Annual “Sunshine Beyond Summer” (SBS) Celebration – The Day Party at a private estate in Holmby Hills (between Beverly Hills and Bel-Air).

Hundreds of celebrities and influencers attended this health-themed awareness event and annual fundraiser. Actress, Tasha Smith, currently starring in Starz’s “Power” and OWN’s “For Better or Worse,” co-hosted the event. Grammy® Award-winning singer/songwriter Estelle and Hip-Hop icon Doug E. Fresh added stunning performances, and celebrity DJ D-Nice kept attendees dancing while the foundation showcased its innovative Wellness Row concept featuring free health screenings, affirmations and their ‘Certified Fit To Party’ platform.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and Sundial Brands (maker of SheaMoisture) partnered with RFHF on the event to bring these celebrities, entertainment industry tastemakers and community leaders together to encourage them to use their voices to help shift cultural attitudes about wellness, disease prevention and health disparities. AHF and Sundial Brands announced their intent at the event to become corporate partners for 2018 to add resources to help RFHF empower one million friends advocating for health.

“I want to build the One in a Million campaign within our Love Healthy Movement to bring people of all colors, genders, races, political affiliations and ages together to unite and focus on the health of our women. Life begins within us. When we heal, our world heals,” said Reed.

Additional event attendees included: Debra Lee, Chairman & CEO BET Network; Duane Martin, (The New Edition Story) & wife Tisha Campbell Martin, (Real Husbands of Hollywood); Eva Marcille (America’s Next Top Model) & RFHF Health Ambassador; Danielle Nicolet, (The Flash/Born Again Virgin); Apryl Jones (Love & Hip Hop Hollywood); Isaiah Washington (Survivor’s Remorse); T.I., Actor/Hip Hop Artist, Danielle Mone’ Truitt (Rebel); Director F. Immediately preceding the SBS, RFHF’s Annual Sunshine Awards took place honoring several awardees including the cast and crew of the soon to be released film, “A Question of Faith,” for the courage to create a film that tackles the important – yet under-discussed – issue of organ donations. AHF’s Rise Above Campaign received a ‘Sunshine Award’ for their work in AIDS awareness, prevention and sexual health. Marcille and Brandee Evans (Hip Hop in Heels) were the RFHF Health Awareness Ambassadors for the event and year. Greenleaf’s Lamman Rucker hosts ‘Brunch with the Brothers’ during #BLFF17 [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

It was all about #BlackMaleExcellence Sunday morning during BronzeLens Film Festival’s “Brunch with the Brothers.” The exclusive event took place at Atlanta’s historic Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel and was hosted by “Greenleaf” star Lamman Rucker.  This year’s “brothers” included Lamman’s “Greenleaf” co-star Keith David, “Queen Sugar” stars Omar Dorsey and Timon Kyle Durrett and E.Roger Mitchell of BET’s “The Quad.”

“Brunch with the Brothers” is an intimate gathering that puts a spotlight on African American men in television and film who are making bold moves in their own unique way. Each “brother” opened up about the numerous obstacles they’ve faced as actors within the entertainment industry. They also talked candidly about character selection, career balance and finances, actors versus artists and the “ebbs and flows” of show business.

“If you study and if you go to school to learn your craft, you can make a living. It doesn’t mean you’re going to be rich,” said Keith David. “You can be on television show after television show, that don’t mean you’re going to be rich. But the skewed perspective is that if you appear on TV everybody’s mind is in your pocket because they don’t know what minimum salary is. What they also don’t know is that you’re being taxed on that as if you’re making that all year round and you’re making that for a job. So, it ain’t what it seems to be!”

The “brothers” also revealed some of their other arts and entertainment interests including creating, writing, directing and producing new content, being able to control the narrative of our stories and much more.

“I want to be a part of that movement that’s going on right now of us showing ourselves on television in ways that we all can relate to,” said Dorsey.

Following the conversation was a brief Q&A with the audience and personal photos.

Queen Latifah & more honored at Women Superstars Luncheon [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

The stars aligned this afternoon for the BronzeLens Film Festival’s 8th Annual Women Superstars Luncheon. The highly anticipated event of the summer took place at Atlanta’s iconic Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel and featured an all-star salute to four of TV and film’s most influential and promising women—Queen Latifah, Crystal Fox, Neema Barnette and Nefertite Nguvu.

The room was literally filled to capacity as a number of the city’s influencers, tastemakers and media personalities gathered to honor these amazing women for their indelible imprints within the entertainment industry.

Queen Latifah made history today as the first recipient of the Festival’s “IconSuperstar” Award. The “Girls Trip” star was recognized for her contributions as a musical performer, actress, producer and content creator. She received her award from filmmaker Will Packer, who also conducted a special one-on-one interview with “Sister Queen” about her career and much more.

Neema Barnette, a veteran producer, writer and director, was filled with gratitude as she was honored with this year’s “Legendary Behind-the-Lens SuperStar” Award. She was recognized for decades of blazing trails for Black women in Hollywood. Barnette is the first African American sitcom director and has most recently worked on such hit series as “The Breaks,” and “Being Mary Jane.” She also applauded award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay for allowing her the opportunity to direct OWN’s hit series, “Queen Sugar” and received her award from one of the show’s actors—Omar Dorsey.

Crystal Fox had a few full circle moments today as she was presented with the “Visionary SuperStar” Award. A veteran of the stage and screen, Fox thanked her “Atlanta” family who has supported her 30 plus year career. She also thanked her late aunt—Nina Simone—for encouraging her to be both an artist and an activist. “We must reflect the times,” she proclaimed before the audience. Fox currently appears on Tyler Perry‘s popular soap opera, “The Haves and the Have Nots” and received her award from friend and fellow actor, T.C. Carson.

Emerging filmmaker, Nefertiti Nguvu received this year’s “Behind-the-Lens SuperStar” Award for her critically-acclaimed project, “In the Morning” as well as her work with Latifah and Common. She is definitely one to watch in the coming years and has already created quite a buzz around Hollywood. She received her award from Queen Sugar‘s Timon Kyle Durrett.
