Celebrity Hairstylist Andre Walker hosts ‘Mother Daughter Hair Party’ [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Award winning-celebrity hairstylist Andre Walker hosted a Mother Daughter Hair Party this past Sunday at Atlanta’s Jon’Ric Luxury Salon & Wellness Spa.

The two-hour event included a tour of the posh new salon and spa (which is located in the historic 200 Peachtree buidling) as well as light hors d’oeuvres and a Q&A session with the famed stylist and co-founder of Andre Walker Hair, Dianne Hudson.

IMG_2947As  previously reported, Walker and Hudson first met on the set of the “Oprah Winfrey Show” back in the 1980’s and decided to work together on a line of natural hair products once Hudson retired from Winfrey’s company in 2006 . The products, which are sold at Jon’Ric Salon and Target stores, features Walker’s Gold System, a superior quality and performance formulated specifically for kinky, curly and textured hair.

Walker talked very candidly about his products versus other brands, rising hair trends and the “do’s and don’ts” of natural hair. The highlight of the afternoon were the kid demonstrations where Walker was able to use a few of the Gold System products like the Beautiful Kinks Styling Créme Gelee and the Quench-Essential Oil. His motto is  “Make Peace With Your Hair.”

Atlanta notable in attendance included “Women on the Move” host Kim McNair, model and performer A Lady Named Pearl and Lalohni Campbell of Per se Media Group. Also on hand to take photos of Walker with his guests was noted photographer and Senior Creative Director of BadBrandingAgencyGlenford Nunez.

RC attends ‘Cutting It In the ATL’ Preview Dinner [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

I had the pleasure of attending a private press dinner and screening Tuesday night for WEtv’s hit reality series, “Cutting It in the ATL. It was held at Del Frisco’s Grille in Buckhead and was hosted by the network’s executives as well as this season’s new and returning cast members.

IMG_9686

The evening began with a cocktail hour (which I totally missed) followed by a few press shots of the hair divas—Dedra Allen, Maja Sly, Beautii, LaKenya Morris and Mushiya Tshikuka, who dramatically entered the room wearing a “Black Lives Matter” ensemble and holding her fist proudly in the air.  Following cast photos was a formal sit-down dinner where I spotted many of my media colleagues including  Janeé Bolden of Bossip, Q aka Funky Dineva, KarmaJonezKnows.com and Satchel Jester of UPSCALE.

IMG_9758

Prior to the screening, we all got a chance to see WEtv’s upcoming reality series “Jim and Chrissy: Vow or Never.” It follows former “Love and Hip Hop” stars Jim Jones and Chrissy Lampkin as they prepare to jump the broom after a five-year long “off again, on again” engagement. It will air beginning September 1  at 10 p.m. EST.

IMG_9750

Following the sneak peek of “Jim and Chrissy” was the new season’s first episode of “Cutting It” where tensions appear to be extremely high between all the ladies. As previously reported, Beautii hosts an industry event with local radio personality Jazzy MacBee. The ladies all come together to support; however, trading business cards quickly turns into throwing shade, as Dedra and her newest partner in crime, Tre’ Stylez, bring the event to a hair raising halt. LaKenya is posed with a difficult decision, as she starts to lose clients who are looking for higher quality hair. As a business owner she will do anything to save her business…even if it means engaging the enemy behind Maja’s back. With the title of Atlanta Hair Boss up for grabs, loyalties between the ladies have never been so fleeting. There will also appearances by celebrity stylist to the stars Stephen Webster and Pat, the “original” creator of the “$50 Weave” and Maja’s new arch enemy.

Take a look at the 15-minute featurette below as well as a few more pics!

R&B vocalist Vivian Green was recently spotted at the Visions Beauty 5th Annual Natural Hair and Health Expo in Birmingham, AL. The expo has become the state’s largest natural hair show and is slowing becoming the southeastern’s “must see” event with attendees from as close as Atlanta and as far north as Detroit.

Other highlights during the expo included SHEEN Magazine’s “What Men Really Think” panel discussion featuring “Saints & Sinners” star Christian Keyes and the highly anticipated Miss Natural Hair and Health Beauty Pageant.

“I reach out to the Birmingham natural hair community each year to see what they want to see at our annual shows,” says expo co-founder Victor Simmons. “This year we were seriously pleased with the turnout. It’s our fifth year and our hard work is paying off. We are connecting with stylists, bloggers and the healthy living community from all over the Southeast and some from the North. Posted by | Cyrena Rose

Oprah Winfrey is embracing the au naturale look on the cover of O, The Oprah Magazine‘s September makeover  issue.

The 58-year-old TV titan admits she once came close to chopping her hair off, but a famous friend helped talk her out of making a major mistake. “I wanted to wear it close-cropped a la Camille Cosby but her husband, Bill, convinced me otherwise. ‘Don’t do it,’ he said. ‘You’ve got the wrong head shape and you’ll disappoint yourself.‘  I took his advice.”

The September issue of O, The Oprah Magazine  is on stands August 7.

The Mane Event: The Coiffure Project spotlights Black women and their natural hair

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Need a little inspiration in going natural or want a break from the wear and tear of hair relaxers?

Well, maybe Glenford Nunez can help you…

The 25 year-old photographer from Baltimore is celebrating the beauty of black women and their natural hair in a collection of portraits called “The Coiffure Project.”  Not realizing he was part of a growing natural hair revolution, Nunez says that he actually stumbled across the project by accident.

“I had no idea until I started putting the photos together.  People have thanked me for what I’m doing for natural hair and black women, but I genuinely had no idea.  It’s a super awesome feeling though.”

Nunez currently has the color/black & white photos on his website with the hopes of creating a coffee table book in the near future.

A number of Hollywood starlets have traded in their perms, wigs and weaves for their natural hair including Solange Knowles who is a spokesperson for the Carol’s Daughter ‘Transitioning Movement’.  Oscar-nominated actress Viola Davis ditched her lace front wigs and opted for a short crop cut when she graced the cover of the LA Times magazine earlier this year.  The response from fans was overwhelmingly positive.
