Beyoncé makes historic ‘Coachella’ Performance (VIDEO)

Written by | Ray Cornelius

WOW!

Beyoncé literally took us back to school this Sunday morning during her highly anticipated Coachella performance. The Queen B made music history as the first African American woman to headline the music festival and paid homage to Black culture all through out her show.

The were so many prideful moments including her Egyptian-inspired entrance (I believe she was channeling the female Pharaoh Hatshepsut), the HBCU marching band and J-Setters that backed her up and that beautiful rendition of the Black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”  She continued her homage to the culture with nods to stepping and Black Greek-Lettered fraternities and sororities, New Orleans Jazz and a befitting excerpt from the late Malcolm X (“The most disrespected woman in America is the Black woman”) plus a music sample from the late Nina Simone. It was—in other words—unapologetically BLACK!

“Coachella thank you for allowing me to be the first Black woman to headline Coachella…Ain’t that bout a Bitch…!”

Other highlights included the Destiny’s Child reunion with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams as well as her “Get Me Bodied” moment with sister Solange and Jay Z‘s appearance on “Deja Vu.”

Additional songs in her two-hour set included “Crazy in Love,” “Freedom,” “DIVA,” “Drunk In Love,” “Bow Down,” “Baby Boy,” “Partition,” “I Care,” “Formation,” “Single Ladies” and much more. She closed out with one of my favorites, “Love on Top.”

5 Reasons Why ‘MAHOGANY’ is still a Winner! (PHOTOS + VIDEO)

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Today marks the 40th Anniversary of one of my favorite fashion movies, Mahogany starring the one and only, Diana Ross.

It features the Motown diva as Tracy Chambers, a woman who rises from the slums of Chicago to become a popular fashion designer in Rome. Fresh from the success of Lady Sings the Blues, Mahogany served as Ross’ dynamic follow-up and featured such iconic stars as Billy Dee WilliamsBeah Richards, Nina Foch, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Marisa Mell and Anthony Perkins.  The film was released on October 8, 1975 and has been a cult classic ever since.

Check out five reasons why we still think it’s a movie that rocks!

5. THE MUSIC

Mahogany

The music for Mahogany was written by the late Michael Masser and includes the Oscar-nominated song, “Do You Know Where You’re Going To,” which was a No. 1 smash hit on the Billboard charts. It has also been performed by Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez.

4. THE FASHION

In addition to starring as the film’s lead, Diana Ross also served as the film’s costume designer. Having studied fashion design, millinery, pattern making and cosmetology as a teenager at Detroit’s Cass Technical High School, Ross used Mahogany as a vehicle to display her enormous talent as a model and fashion maven.

“The whole experience of making Mahogany (1975) was such a joy—well almost the whole time of it. One of the best parts was that I got to design my costumes. (And I still have them all, in storage—I’ve never thrown anything away.) But for Motown, I might have become a fashion designer,” states Ross in her bookGoing Back.

3. THE LOVE STORY

Mahogany1

“Success is nothing without someone that you love to share it with…”

No other Black actors possessed dynamic on screen chemistry during the 1970’s like Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams. Ross as the determined fashion designer and Williams as the rising politician, were the definition of a “power couple” before it became a popular term. Both created images of Black love, romance and influence that still hasn’t been replicated in movies today.

“I always felt like we were two little kids going into a playground and just running around and having a lot of fun with each other,” said Billy Dee Williams to Oprah Winfrey about his experience making Mahogany with Diana Ross.

2. THE INFLUENCE

Mahogany’s influence on African-American fashion and style is without question. The film inspired generations of designers, stylists, models, actresses, and singers from the late 1970’s through today.

“Diana Ross, particularly in ‘Mahogany,’ showcased her love for fashion by bringing creativity and courage to the screen. She brought us hope from the poorest black neighborhood, showing us that with a dream and incredible passion, we could rise above it all.”~Johnetta Boone, fashion and costumer designer

1. THE ICON

The original diva, Diana Ross created the blueprint for infusing music and fashion and has been the quintessential style icon for over 5 decades. She has been a muse for such top designers as Bob Mackie, Thierry Mugler and Tom Ford.

Her fashion influence can easily be seen in some of today’s biggest superstars including Taraji P. Henson, Kelly Rowland, Janet Jackson, Solange, Jill Scott, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Lil KimMary J. Blige, Vivica A. Fox, RuPaul and Rihanna.

“Diana Ross is a big inspiration to all of us. We all grew up watching everything about her—her mic placement, her grace, her style and her class.”~Beyoncé

Kelly Rowland channels Diana Ross and Sade for ‘Mane Addicts’ (PHOTOS + VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Grammy winning-entertainer Kelly Rowland teamed up with Mane Addicts for an exclusive photo shoot saluting her favorite hair divas—Diana Ross, Sade, Bianca Jagger and Farida Khelfa Goude. Celebrity hair stylist, Kim Kimble, was recruited to create the hair looks while celebrity makeup artist, Rokael Lizama, transforms Rowland into the iconic beauties.

Check out her other looks below along with captions from the photo shoot + behind-the-scenes video:

sade vs kelly feature

“We went for a very classic Sade, with a red lip and a ponytail. She tends to wear a lot of orangey-red lipsticks, so I used a shade that I know works well for a lot of different people called Lady Danger by MAC.”

Bianca vs Kelly 34

“Kelly’s third look was inspired by Bianca Jagger,” says Rokael. “Her hair was set in large rollers, then brushed out, creating a larger bouncier curl. Then gathered in the back and tucked into a faux bob. Paired with a pill box hot, she exudes 70’s class.”

Kelly vs Frida inside

“The last look of the day was inspired by Farida Khelfa Goude, who had the most sculpted long curls. Kelly wore her hair extra long and natural curls were defined with a small curling iron, then separated with product. Her hair was then pinned and tucked around the face to create the illusion of fringe.”

TV BUZZ: Kelly Rowland + Brandy, Vivica A. Fox and ‘Empire’

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Here’s the latest TV Buzz…

BFF’s Kelly Rowland and Brandy are coming to BET. Reportedly the two R&B singers have inked deals with the network to headline in two separate projects. Rowland will star in a reality-series titled, “Chasing Destiny,” where she will try to find the next big girl group. This series is very different from the pilot she shot for the network back in 2012 titled, “What Would Dylan Do?” If you recall, Rowland was supposed to play a relationship blogger from L.A. I guess BET decided to scrap the idea and go with an unscripted series. As far as Brandy goes, she will star in a romantic comedy about a cosmetic mogul who is trying to adjust to her new life as a divorced, single mother of a ten-year-old son.  [SINGERS ROOM]

Vivica A. Fox is headed back to reality…this time as a “Hollywood Diva.” The veteran actress is joining the hit TV One series that also includes Elise Neal, Golden Brooks, Paula Jai Parker, Lisa Wu and Countess Vaughn. “Hollywood Divas” takes a look at African-American actress as they try to navigate through the unpredictable world of television and film. Fox was most recently seen on the úberly popular reality series, “Celebrity Apprentice.”  [EURWEB]

Congrats goes to “Empire” actresses Gabourey Sidibe and Ta’Rhonda Jones. The two have been promoted to series regulars.  Sidibe plays Becky, the no-nonsense assistant to Terrence Howard’s character, Lucious Lyons while Jones plays the ghetto fabulous Porsha, who assists Taraji P. Henson’s outrageous character, Cookie Lyons. We are so looking forward to seeing more of these ladies on the show when it returns for a second season later on this year. [INDIEWIRE]
