BeBe Winans to release ‘Born For This’ Album + West Coast Premiere of Musical (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Six-time Grammy winning Gospel music icon BeBe Winans is gearing up to release his first solo project in five years. The album is titled, Born For This and is inspired by his highly successful musical, “Born For This: The BeBe Winans Story.” The musical is making its West Coast Premiere today (July 11) through August 6th.

As previously reported, “Born For This” boasts an esteemed creative team triumvirate, with a book written by Winans, directed by Charles Randolph-Wright (Motown: The Musical, “Greenleaf”), with music supervision by Donald Lawrence. It is an emotional journey that chronicles Winans’ early years as the youngest son born to a family whose name is synonymous with Gospel music, and depicts his rise to superstardom and his internal conflicts between faith and fame.  Broadway World declares, “This spectacular musical is impossible not to enjoy.” The captivating production begins in the Winans family’s humble home in Detroit, MI, and follows Winans as he travels the unexpected and unparalleled road toward his destiny.

The musical documents the inception of BeBe and CeCe Winans, played with eerie accuracy by Winans’ nephew and niece, Juan Winans and Deborah Joy Winans (“Greenleaf”), respectively, their unconventional beginnings as cast members of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s televangelistic phenomenon, “Praise the Lord,” their chance meeting and subsequent friendship with Whitney Houston, and their relationship with their older brothers, the legendary Gospel quartet, The Winans.

Born For This, the album will feature guest appearances by Tramaine Hawkins, Tobbi & Tommi, Debra Winans-Lowe, Margaret Bell, Pastor Marvin Winans, and Mom Winans, as well as newcomer Kiandra Richardson, who stuns in her portrayal of Houston in the live production.

RC attends the ATL Premiere of ‘Born For This: The BeBe Winans Story’ [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

It was a family affair Saturday night as the entire Winans clan and Jim Bakker gathered for the world premiere of BeBe Winans new musical “Born For This.” The show is playing now thru May 15 at Atlanta’s famed Alliance Theatre at the Woodruff Art Center.

IMG_2410

BeBe Winans

The two-hour musical follows gospel singing brother and sister duo, BeBe and CeCe Winans as they join Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s Praise The Lord (PTL) Network television show. The Winans teenagers become not only television celebrities, they also become like adopted children of the Bakkers, integrating TV evangelism in Pineville, North Carolina. As BeBe and CeCe encounter fame, fortune, and even a young Whitney Houston, BeBe must learn to balance his desire for success with his true calling.

IMG_2251

Charles Randolph-Wright with Deborah Joy, Juan, Sophia and BeBe Winans

“Born For This” features the next generation of Winans singers – Juan and Deborah Joy Winans and boy do they nail it as their aunt and uncle. Kirstin Wyatt steals the show as the over-the-top Tammy Faye Bakker. Chaz Pofahl, Nita Whitaker and Milton Craig Nealy are also outstanding as Jim Bakker, Mom Winans and Pop Winans. But that Kiandra Richardson as Whitney Houston is the true highlight of the musical. She not only looks like the late singer but she sounds and moves just like her. She was so convincing that I even yelled “Sang Nippy” during her show stopping number, “Don’t Live for the Applause.”

IMG_2324

“I love this man. I love this man. He has continued to give me and my sister a platform for all our lives and I honor him,” said BeBe Winans about Jim Bakker during last night’s curtain speech.

Celebrities in attendance included Congressman John Lewis, actress Jasmine Guy, actor E. Roger Mitchell, “Underground” actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell, legendary gospel singer Edwin Hawkins, actress and singer Chandra Currelley, book author and playwright Pearl Cleage, gospel singers Tasha Cobbs,Ted Winn and Isaac Carree, actress Tinashe Kajese-Bolden and “Blackbird” star Julian Walker.

IMG_2417

Winans Family attendees included Mom Winans, Marvin Winans, Michael Winans, Carvin Winans, Angie Winans, Debbie Winans and a host of nieces and nephews. Jim Bakker attended with his current wife Lori Bakker. Former PTL employee Penny Hollenbeck, who is portrayed by Alison Whitehurst in the show, was also in attendance as well as Pat and Gary Houston.  Unfortunately CeCe Winans, Oprah Winfrey, Cissy Houston and Tyler Perry were unable to attend.

IMG_2480

BeBe Winans giving the curtain call speech with the cast and family on stage

The show closed out with a rousing curtain call where BeBe welcomed his family and Jim Bakker to the stage. He thanked a number of supporters and close friends followed by a reprise of the musical’s closing number, “Book of Life (He Signed My Name).”

On a personal note…Seeing this show and having the privilege to watch it evolve from last year to this year has been a true blessing. It is a production that I highly recommend for anyone who chasing their dreams. It has an eternal message of hope and the characters are real and inspiring. It will make you laugh and cry but most of all, it will make you believe in the power of faith.

RC goes Behind-the-Scenes of ‘Born For This: The BeBe Winans Story’ [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

In 1991, former original “Dreamgirls” star, Charles Randolph Wright choreographed a television special for brother and sister gospel duo, BeBe and CeCe Winans as a favor for his friend and actress, Chip Fields. Twenty-five years later, Wright is reuniting with Winans as the writer and director of his new musical, “Born For This: The BeBe Winans Story” for Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre.

The two friends discussed their new collaboration on Tuesday evening as part of a Behind-The-Scenes Experience. They were also joined by the show’s musical director and Stellar Award winner, Donald Lawrence as well as the show’s choreographer, Warren Adams and assistant choreographer, Brian Harlan Brooks.

IMG_0579

Director and writer Charles Randolph-Wright talking about “Born For This”

“Born for This” is a new musical that follows Detroit natives BeBe and CeCe Winans as they experience the ultimate in culture shocks when invited to join Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s Praise The Lord Network television show. The show stars the next generation of Winans singers – Juan and Deborah Joy Winans as BeBe and CeCe, Kirstin Wyatt as Tammy Faye Bakker, Chaz Pofahl as Jim Bakker and Kiandra Richardson as Whitney Houston.

Wright, who most recently directed Berry Gordy’s Broadway hit “Motown: The Musical,” confessed to attendees that this musical has totally exceeded his expectations.

IMG_0582

Charles Randolph-Wright with Warren Adams

“The greatest thing for me is that when I look around and see five Black men who are guiding this piece and taking this journey. This does not happen! You do not see this, especially in the higher world of theatre. To have the actors look at us and breakdown into tears is incredible. We went through this on ‘Motown’ but to have this and with such amazing energy. This is greater than I’ve imagine and I dream big!”

Wright went on to further explain that he knew he had to premiere “Born For This” in the South and at the Alliance Theatre. The company has built a reputation within the industry for successfully launching great musicals including “Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida” and “The Color Purple – The Musical” and most recently “Bring It On – The Musical.”

IMG_0572

BeBe Winans discussing how faith is the driving force behind the show

Winans is also overjoyed with the production and credits “faith” as the driving force behind his passion project.  “I told Mike and the Alliance that ‘I don’t have no money but I got faith’ and that is what’s going to make it happen. As we have taken this journey, through faith, God has already started multiplying.”

After the discussion, Winans gave an impromptu performance of the show’s title song, “Born For This” and then we were taken to a tech rehearsal in the Alliance Theatre space. Unfortunately, I was not permitted to take pics of the stage or the actors but trust me when I tell you this show is going to be a hit. It is definitely Broadway bound!

Coming To The Stage: Off-Broadway Shows You Need to See in 2016!

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Contrary to popular belief, some of the best plays and musicals are actually performed Off-Broadway. In fact, a number of Tony-winning performances are played out first on smaller stages around the country before they’re brought to the Great White Way.

RC has compiled six new shows from the NYC to the ATL that we think will have theater goers talking all throughout the New Year. Some of them include Broadway veterans like Phylicia Rashad and Norm Lewis while others will feature a few TV/film stars like Tessa Thompson and Colman Domingo.

Check them out below and see you at the theater!

SMART PEOPLE:  1/26-3/6 at Second Stage Theatre NYC

The quest for love, achievement and identity is universal, but what role does race play in the story of our lives? On the eve of Obama’s first election, four Harvard intellectuals find themselves entangled in a complex web of social and sexual politics in this provocative and funny new play by Lydia R. Diamond (Stick Fly), helmed by Kenny Leon (The Wiz Live), the Tony Award-winning director of the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun.  Starring Creed actress Tessa Thompson.

DOT by Colman Domingo 2/4-3/13 at Vineyard Theatre NYC

Family matriarch Dotty and her three adult children gather for the holidays with more than exchanging presents on their minds. As Dotty struggles to navigate life with dementia, her children fight to balance care for their mother and care for themselves. A testament to the enduring bonds of family, this hilarious and moving new play by The Butler’s Colman Domingo grapples unforgettably with aging parents, midlife crises, and the heart of an inner city neighborhood. Directed by Tony Award winner Susan Stroman.

American Buffalo: 2/9-3/6 Southwest Arts Center ATL

This is the play that put David Mamet on the map as a major American playwright when it appeared on Broadway in 1977, winning the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play.

Set in an urban junk shop, three small-time crooks make plans to rob a man of his coin collection, including what they believe to be an extremely valuable “Buffalo nickel.” However, as the night goes on, motivations change, loyalties squirm and shift and paranoia rises to generate heart-pounding drama.  Starring Neal Ghant and Garrett Gray and directed by John Dillon.

CABIN IN THE SKY: 2/10-14 City Center NYC

Originally produced in 1940, Cabin in the Sky followed Porgy and Bess in celebrating African-American music and dance traditions. The musical tells the story of “Little Joe” Jackson, a charming ne’er-do-well who dies in a saloon brawl and is given six months on earth to prove his worth to the Lord’s General (Tony Award nominee Norm Lewis) and his long-suffering wife Petunia (Tony Award winner LaChanze), while resisting the temptations of the Devil’s Head Man (Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper). Vernon Duke’s score — which features the jazz hit “Taking a Chance on Love”– will be restored to its original glory for Encores!  Directed by TV and film actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson.

HEAD OF PASSES: 3/15-4/17 Public Theatre NYC

Tarell Alvin McCraney, MacArthur Genius Award-winning playwright of the acclaimed The Brother/Sister Plays, returns to The Public with an astonishing, deeply moving new drama about family, acceptance and the power of faith. At the mouth of the Mississippi River, Shelah’s family and friends have come to celebrate her birthday and save her from a leaking roof. But in this contemporary parable inspired by the Book of Job, unexpected events turn the reunion into the ultimate test of faith and love. As her world seems to collapse around her, Shelah (Phylicia Rashad) must fight to survive the rising flood of life’s greatest challenges. Directed by Tina Landau and also starring Francois Battiste, Kyle Beltran, and J. Bernard Calloway.

Born For This – The BeBe Winans Story: 4/13-5/15 Alliance Theatre ATL

From Charles Randolph-Wright, director of Motown the Musical, and six-time Grammy Award-winning icon BeBe Winans comes a hilarious and heart-warming journey toward self-discovery. Detroit natives BeBe and CeCe Winans, youngest siblings of the Winans family dynasty, experience the ultimate in culture shocks when invited to join Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s Praise The Lord Network television show.
