‘Claws’ renewed for 4th and Final Season

The ladies of CLAWS—Desna, Polly, Quiet Ann, Virginia and Jenn—will all live to see another season but unfortunately it will be their last. According to S&A, this will be the TNT series fourth and final season. The show, led by Emmy-nominated actress Niecy Nash, has been my Sunday night guilty pleasure for the last three years and I hate to see it go.

“For the past three seasons, Claws has handled delicate and culturally relevant themes like race, class, gender, age and sexual orientation with grace and humor via superb storytelling,” said Brett Weitz, General Manager for TNT, TBS, & truTV. “Fans cherish the over-the-top Clawsian moments that have defined its run, and we will do them justice as we wrap up the tale of Desna and her crew.”

Claws follows the zany and over-the-top lives of five nail techs set against the surreal landscape of Florida and the extreme excesses of the crime world. It also features the amazingly talented Carrie Preston, Karreuche Tran, Judy Reyes, Jenn Lyon, Jack Kesy, Kevin Rankin, Jason Antoon, Evan Daigle, Suleka Mathew, Harold Perrineau and Dean Norris.

Stay tuned…

Niecy Nash & the cast of ‘Claws’ host ATL Screening of Season 2 [PHOTOS]

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Emmy-winning producer and acclaimed actress Niecy Nash took over Atlanta’s Regal Cinema Atlantic Station Theater Saturday evening for a sneak peek of CLAWS Season 2. The TNT original drama returns to primetime this summer beginning June 10.

Joining Nash for the advanced screening were her cast members – Georgia-born actress and one of my faves Carrie Preston (Polly) as well as Jimmy Jean-Louis (Gregory Ruval) and Jack Kesy (Roller).

CLAWS follows Nash as Desna, the owner a Manatee County nail salon, where there’s a lot more going on than silk wraps and pedicures. She and her outrageous staff of working class women are trying to get by while navigating the luscious, absurd and extreme excesses of the crime world. Rounding out the rest of cast is Harold Perrineau, Jenn Lyon, Judy Reyes, Karrueche Tran, Jason Antoon, Kevin Rankin and Dean Norris.

While I can’t say much about the season 2 opener, I’ll tell you that it has just as many laugh-out-loud moments as last season but with a helluva lot more plot twists and turns.  In other words, brace yourselves!

Following the screening, RC got a chance to talk with the cast exclusively about the show, their characters and much more.

Niecy Nash on Desna’s quick-witt:

“I feel like you have to go back to her genesis because she was raised in a group home. She didn’t really have parents and she had to take care of her brother, who had his own mental challenges. So trying to navigate that and taking care of him forced her to think quick and to find ways. She might be down but she ain’t out. You know what I mean? Like a palm tree in the storm, it may bend a lil bit but that thang ain’t gone break. She’s that girl and because she’s that girl, there’s always a way.”

Jimmy Jean-Louis on CLAWS alluring and unpredictable nature…

“It’s just good. I think its unexpected what we’re offering. The storylines are different. The characters are amazing and it’s stuff that you’ve probably never seen on television before.”

Check out the rest of my exclusive interviews with the cast on an upcoming edition of my arts and entertainment radio show, UPFRONT.

In addition to the CLAWS cast, a number of Atlanta celebrities were also in attendance including Snowfall actor Isaiah John along with his sister Acrimony actress Bianca John, Bravo reality stars Ben and Brooklyn Tankard, Saints & Sinners actresses Dawn Halfkenny and Marquita Goings, Too Close to Home actress Ashley Love-Mills and rapper Kore Stacks.

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

TNT has released a new trailer for its popular series CLAWS starring Niecy Nash. It returns to Sunday nights on June 10 at 9 p.m. EST.

CLAWS is a midnight-dark, wickedly funny meditation on female badness set in a South Florida nail salon. It follows the rise of five diverse and treacherous manicurists working at the Nail Artisan of Manatee County salon, where there is a lot more going on than silk wraps and pedicures. CLAWS is about good women caught in bad places with worse men. It’s the story of hardworking women trying to get by in this economy, set against the surreal, bright, gritty landscape of Florida and the luscious, absurd, extreme excesses of the crime world.

Rounding out the cast is Carrie Preston, Harold Perrineau, Jenn Lyon, Judy Reyes, Karrueche Tran, Jason Antoon, Kevin Rankin, Jack Kesy and Dean Norris. Also joining the cast for this new season is my buddy veteran stage, screen and TV actress Sheryl Lee Ralph.

TNT’s ‘CLAWS’ feat. Niecy Nash & Karrueche Tran renewed for 2nd Season

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

YAY!!!! TNT has ordered another season of its popular drama series “CLAWS” starring Niecy Nash and Karrueche Tran. According to THR, the show holds basic cable’s No. 4 slot this year among adults 18-49.

“Look out Manatee County, these ladies are coming back for more. These strong-willed, hilarious women represent the diverse voices this network is all about. Claws has certainly struck a chord with audiences and continues to attract new viewers each week,” said TNT in a statement.

As previously reported, “CLAWS” follows the rise of five diverse and treacherous manicurists working at the Nail Artisan of Manatee County salon, where there is a lot more going on than silk wraps and pedicures. It features Desna (played by Nash), who lives with and cares for her mentally ill twin brother, Dean (played by Harold Perrineau). Desna’s staff includes best friend Jennifer (Jenn Lyon), a tenuously sober ex-party girl raising two children from previous relationships; Quiet Ann (Judy Reyes), Desna’s enigmatic driver who also provides security for the salon; Polly (Carrie Preston), a mild-mannered preppy who recently served time in prison for identity theft; and Virginia (Tran), who makes no effort to hide her boredom and impatience with her job. Adding chaos to the Nail Artisan mix is Roller (Jack Kesy), a gangstered-out redneck who runs a barely legal pain clinic and uses Desna’s nail salon to launder their obscene profits; Bryce (Kevin Rankin), Jennifer’s husband who is also newly sober and trying to stay legit by working as an abundance coach; and Dr. Ken Brickman (Jason Antoon), a bona fide doctor at a decidedly un-bona fide and illegal drug clinic.

I recently caught up with the ladies at the ESSENCE Festival where we talked about their characters and a whole lot more. Here is what executive producer and showrunner, Janine Sherman Barrois had to say about the overall message of the series:

“I think you have five bad-ass women who want power. They want sex. They want a piece of the pie and they’re unapologetic and not asking men for permission. And I think that’s what women need to do now.”

RC will keep you posted on all of the new season details. “CLAWS” airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on TNT.

Watch Mary J. Blige’s ‘Strength of a Woman’ feat. Cast of ‘Claws’ (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Turner’s TNT and the cast of the new series “Claws” have teamed up with Grammy winner Mary J. Blige to appear in her new music video for “Strength of a Woman” the title track off the artist’s 13th studio album. “Claws” stars Niecy Nash, Carrie Preston, Jenn Lyon, Judy Reyes and Karrueche Tran are all featured in the video, which debuted on Blige’s VEVO page today.

The release of “Strength of a Woman” comes during the buildup to the “Claws” premiere, taking place this Sunday, June 11, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) across TNT platforms. The premiere will be followed by an encore presentation on Twitter.

“The inspiration for ‘Strength of a Woman’ came from my life. It came from some very heavy trials and hardships through my life that I had to come through,” said Mary J. Blige. “There are a lot of similar themes in the show Claws. They’re in some heavy, sticky, nasty situations but that is what survival is about.”

With its story focusing on five manicurists working at a Central Florida nail salon, “Claws” celebrates empowered women as they navigate the challenges of their professional and daily lives. Blige integrated members of the cast into her “Strength of a Woman” music video in order to show off an array of proud, hard-working women – a common thread woven throughout the R&B songstress’ album and resonating at the heart of its title song. “Strength of a Woman” is a reflection of Blige’s journey to overcoming emotional turmoil and, like Claws, honors women by exploring themes of self-worth and empowerment.

WATCH Teaser for TNT’s ‘CLAWS’ featuring Niecy Nash (VIDEO)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

If you were watching the SAG Awards tonight you may have noticed a very short but vibrant preview for an upcoming TNT’s series titled “CLAWS.” It stars Niecy Nash (my distant cousin on my mama side…in my head) and model Karrueche Tran and debuts this summer.

According to S&A, “CLAWS” follows the rise of five diverse and treacherous manicurists working at the Nail Artisan of Manatee County salon, where there is a lot more going on than silk wraps and pedicures. At the center is salon owner Desna (played by Nash), who lives with and cares for her mentally ill twin brother, Dean (played by Harold Perrineau).

I am already intrigued by the show for starters because I love me some Niecy Nash. Two, I was born and raised in Orlando, Florida and spent a lot of time in and around my brother’s hair salon during my middle school and high school years. So, I’d be curious to see their spin on salon life and nail techs. RC will keep you posted as we get closer to the premiere date.

“CLAWS” is executive produced by Rashida Jones.
