I heard a voice that told me I’m essential/How all my fears are limiting my potential/Said it’s time to step into the light and/Use every bit of the power I have inside/So what’chu waiting on/Who You waiting for/If You don’t take a chance You’ll never know what’s in store/Just Do You (Somebody’s got to be a star)/Just Do You (Somebody’s got to raise the bar)/Just Do You (Somebody’s got to change the game)/Just Do You (Today)

take a look: India.Arie – ‘Cocoa Butter’ (video premiere)

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Grammy-winning soul music vocalist, India.Arie has dropped a new video for her latest single, “Cocoa Butter.”  If you recall, the record’s cover art was a controversial topic last March when it appeared that Arie had bleached her skin to look lighter. The singer, who is known for embracing her natural hair and dark-skinned tones, denied the claim and blamed her obvious brighter hue on “magnificent lighting.” From the looks of the video, Arie’s silky brown skin looks just as it did when we were first introduced to her in early 2001.

Check it out below and see for yourself:

India.Arie denies lightening her skin for new album cover

Soul music vocalist India.Arie took to Twitter recently to shut down the rumors that she lightened her skin.

Apparently, fans of the “Brown Skin” singer thought she looked a little lighter than usual for the cover art of her new album “Cocoa Butter.” Arie, known for celebrating her curves, natural hair and dark skinned tones, laughs at the accusation and attributes the brighter hues to “magnificent” lighting. She also gives four reasons why she has not bleached her skin:

new-music-india-arie-cocoa-butter1.jpg21. I would endanger my health that way

2. I’m so in love with myself I have no DESIRE to BLEACH myself. Lol

3. The GLOW you see IS (magnificent) lighting

4. THE LIGHT you see, Well that’s all ME!

At any rate, Arie welcomes the conversation but assures fans that she is very happy with the skin she is in. “Personally speaking! i’m happy to say I have NOT BLEACHED my skin LOL! ROTF at the thought.”

What are your thoughts about the situation? Do you think she has bleached her skin or do you think the picture was photoshopped to maker her look lighter?

Soul-music star India. Arie is doing a back breaking pose on the cover of next month’s music issue of Yoga Journal.

The singer shares how yoga and time away from the spotlight helped her become more centered after her disappointing loss during the 2002 Grammy Awards. If like India. Arie, you would like to try something new and experience some yoga, you might want to check out yoga retreats goa. There are several places you can experience yoga and find your inner self you just have to find the right place and experience for you. You never know, it may change your whole outlook on life, just like it did for India.

“Everything in my music has always been emotionally and spiritually motivated…But after I started doing yoga, the place where I came from changed drastically,” she says.

Arie also says an improved diet helped redirect her music focus as well.

Speaking of music…look for her new album, Open Door to drop later on this year.

Still a Friend of Mine: Incognito in Concert!

British-soul group, Incognito brought their North American tour to Atlanta’s Center Stage this past weekend for two sold-out performances.  The eclectic group of vocalists and musicians performed a number of their classics as well as a few news songs from their latest CD, “Surreal.”

The evening started with show opener, guitarist Khari Cabral who got the crowd moving with soulful Latin selections taken from his latest CD, “Clementine Sun.”  His hour-long set featured amazing vocals from lead singers, Chantae Cann and Chanda Leigh as well as a few special guest appearances by trumpeter Russell Gunn, President Obama’s favorite male vocalist Anthony David, and Grammy Award-winning vocalist India.Arie, whose rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Never in Your Sun” had the audience wanting more.

After a very brief intermission, Incognito took to the stage with a few new and familiar faces.  Led by the guitarist, Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick, the British-Soul music pioneers sang and danced their way through nearly 31 years of music featuring new vocalists Mo Brandis, Vanessa Haynes, Natalie Williams and of course the “voice” of Incognito and long time lead singer, Maysa Leak.

Soul music vocalist India.Arie recently told Essence that while in the midst of creating new music, she is also creating a new India. The brown-skinned beauty confessed to having gained some extra pounds a few years ago due to some “confluence of negative experiences.”

Now the, “I Am Not My Hair” singer, who is currently working on a new album, Open Door,  is maintaining her healthy weight through exercise and better food choices.

“Our food choices show up on our body. [We have to] know that are no short cuts to looking and feeling our best,” she says. “I am still learning about this but it shows up on my skin when I am off-balance…and I feel more tired, too.”

Here’s to wishing her well and much success this New Year!
