Snoop Dogg, Goodie Mob and Erykah Badu play the One Music Fest + PHOTOS

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Atlanta’s Masquerade Music Park was filled to capacity this weekend for the 2013 One Music Fest.  Now in its fourth year, the outdoor concert promotes unity through music with performances from diverse acts ranging from alternative rock to hip-hop.

This year’s festival boasted an impressive line-up of acts that included rap icon Snoop Dogg, R&B newcomer Luke James, hip-hop star Joey Bada$$, soul music vocalist Goapele. The show was also hosted by D.R.E.S tha BEATnik and Joi, formerly of the group Lucy Pearl.

Philadelphia vocalist Res also graced the secondary “Purple Rain” stage along with Atlanta’s own Ruby Velle & The SoulPhonics. Their sound is easily comparable to that of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings as well as the late Amy Winehouse.

Groove Theory’s Amel Larrieux was scheduled to perform but pulled out at the last minute due to a sudden illness. However, Erykah Badu aka Lo Down Loretta Brown stepped right in and performed a 30-minute set of her classic songs including “Appletree,” “Bag Lady” and “I Want You.”

However, the biggest surprise of the evening was the reunion of Goodie Mob. The pioneers of Atlanta’s hip-hop-soul music scene performed a lengthy set of their greatest hits as well as a  few new songs from their current album, Age Against the Machine.  Cee Lo Green also introduced his new artist and protégé V-Bozeman, who wowed the audience with her version of the Pussycat Dolls’ “Don’t Cha,” a song that was co-written and produced by Green.

Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion closed out the festival with a medley of all of his hits. He was joined on stage by three dancers and a dog mascot wearing a “Nasty Dogg” T-shirt and carrying a blunt in his hands. Only Uncle Snoop could get away with such a show!

Good News for Cee Lo Green and Nick Cannon

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Congratulations to Cee Lo Green!  The former Voice  judge has a new unscripted series that is coming to TBS.

According to THR,  the Turner cable network has ordered six-episodes of The Cee Lo Life  with plans to debut the series in 2014.  The show will follow Green as he tries to balance his hectic schedule of producing, recording, and performing. This series will also reunite Green with former Goodie Mob members Big Gipp, Khujo and T-Mo as they resurrect the classic hip-hop group.

Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic movies says,“With his distinctive voice, winning personality and remarkable ability to tap into a wide range of musical styles, Cee Lo Green has risen to the top of the music industry…This new TBS series will give viewers the chance to get to know Cee Lo Green, who is without a doubt one of the hardest-working men in show business. The Cee Lo Life is certain to be a smart, fun and funny journey packed with a lot of great music.”

Nick Cannon23Are you ready for the hippest trip in America?  Well, Nick Cannon thinks so.

The America’s Got Talent  host is reportedly in negotiations for the rights to the Soul Train  franchise. According to THR, Cannon is looking to reboot the show into a “modern-day-format…with modern stars like The Dream and Meek Mill commanding Soul Train dance lines.”

As previously reported Cannon signed a deal with NBC last year to develop and produce scripted and unscripted programs for the network. The deal included a revival of his hugely popular MTV improv show, Wild ‘N Out.

Soul Train  was the “longest-running, first run nationally syndicated show in television history” and aired from 1971 to 2006. The show’s creator, Don Cornelius died Feb. 2012 from a self-inflicted gun wound.

RC will keep you posted as more of this story develops.

TLC’s new tour + Cee Lo Green to sing on ‘The Voice’

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Surviving members of the famed R&B group, TLC are celebrating their 20th anniversary in a major way. According to THR, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and Tionne ‘T-Boz” Watkins are releasing a new album, debuting their highly-anticipated VH1 biopic and going on a national tour which will feature a digitally generated performance from their late third member, Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes.

As previously reported, the big announcement was made last year on the 10th anniversary of Lopes’ death. Surprisingly, Lopes’ performance will feature an archived images of her as opposed to a new hologram image like the one Dr. Dre used of Tupac during last year’s Coachella performance.

“The word anniversary means a celebration. For us, her death will never be a celebration, it’s still something that hurts,” Watkins said in a statement, with Thomas adding, “Lisa is our sister. You never get over losing a family member. We love her and we miss her and that isn’t ever going to change.”

Cee LoIn other ATL music news, Cee Lo Green is gearing up to perform on a very familiar stage. The multi-Grammy-winning entertainer is returning to The Voice on May 8 for a bonus edition along with legendary rocker Rod Stewart.

Fellow Atlantan, T.I. is also scheduled to perform on the following Tuesday, May 14 along with Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams, who served as a mentor this season.

Green, who coached the show for the first three seasons, will perform “Only You,” a new song from his forthcoming album, Girl Power. Green left the show after last season to do his Loberace gig in Las Vegas. He was replaced by another fellow Atlantan, Usher.

The Voice  airs on Mondays and Tuesdays on NBC.

T.I. excited about collaborations on new album (VIDEO)

Rapper T.I. has been very busy these days.  Between his reality-show with wife Tiny, the new STARZ series Boss, and his new book, it’s a wonder he has time for his first love…music.  However, the self-proclaimed ‘King of the South’ has been working on that too and just recently announced a few collaborations on the new album.

According to The Urban Daily, T.I.’s new project, Trouble Man  features songs with Andre 3000, Pink, Cee-Lo Green and R. Kelly.

In an interview with Fuse TV, the hip hop star says, “One of my proudest moments as an artist was when I got to collaborate with 3000. This is a record that has been in the works for probably about six years now, and we finally got around to doing it and the record is called ‘Sorry.’ It’s a phenomenal tune. He’s phenomenal. I got a record with Pink called ‘Guns and Roses,’ it’s a dope joint. I got a record with A$AP Rocky called ‘Wild Side.’ Cee-Lo and R. Kelly, those are two other collaborations I’m very proud of.”

Usher & Shakira to replace Cee Lo & Christina on season 4 of ‘The Voice’

Posted by | Cyrena Rose

A few hours ago the news broke that two new singularly named superstar judges, Shakira and Usher, will replace Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green for Season 4 of The Voice.  Both Christina and Cee Lo will be back for Season 5 in fall 2013, according to NBC.

Yahoo reports Christina is getting ready to release her comeback album, Lotus, in November (her new single, “Your Body,” debuted last week to positive reviews), and Cee Lo working on a Christmas album and a new sitcom, it’s no surprise that they are the first “Voice” judges to take official leaves of absence.

As I have expressed since day one of the show, that I am a singer and performer first and I am so excited to get back to that love. Since this year NBC and ‘The Voice’ have decided to tape back-to-back seasons, requiring a full-year commitment, it is important for me to take Season 4 off, allowing me to support my music that my fans have been waiting for…” Christina Aguilera

In the same press release, Cee Lo said: “First, thank you NBC for supporting my decision to take this Season 4 hiatus! It says that I’m seen and respected as a complete artist and not just a cast member. I’m highly enthusiastic about focusing my undivided attention on my additional endeavors and interests like my upcoming solo album, new Goodie Mob album, Las Vegas residency ‘Loberace,’ new memoir, and new NBC comedy…I will return for Season 5 and will be watching Season 4. NBC is home and as far as Usher and Shakira are concerned–‘mi casa su casa.‘”

7 Questions with Ray Lavender

Written by | Ray Cornelius

R&B vocalist Ray Lavender isn’t afraid to admit that he is a bit country.  As a matter of fact, the Louisiana-born singer says it’s his “southern twang” that sets him apart from all of the other male R&B singers and keeps his female fans wanting more.

Ray, who was once signed to Akon’s Konlive  label, is now back on the scene with a new album, a new label [Global Artist Group] and a new single entitled, “We Love.”

RC had a chance to talk to the R&B crooner about his latest project, who he’d like to work with in the future and what its really like playing “kissy face” with Hollywood bad girl, Omarosa.

Check it out…

RC:  How did you get the name Ray Lavender?

RL:  I went through a series of names with the label: Ray Black, LA Ray, Ray Earl, and plain old Ray. And so I ended up telling the label to let me sleep on it and get back to them. The next morning I woke up and called Akon and was like, why don’t we just slice my name right down the middle, because my name is Ray Earl Lamar Lavender, and let’s just call me Ray Lavender. And so Akon was like, “That’s it. Let’s ride.” Keep in mind I had already had a single [My Girl Got a Girlfriend] on the radio and at that point I was called Ray L.

RC:  June is Black Music Month, what are your top three albums of all time?

RL:  Sam Cooke’s “Ain’t that Good News” featuring the song “A Change is Gonna Come.” Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and then I would have to say R. Kelly’s “Twelve Play.”

RC: What makes your sound different from other male singers out there?

RL:  I’m country man. What you’re going to get out of me is that country crooning soul pop with a hip hop appeal.  I’m not gonna say that I have more soul than the next; but it’s just my tone and texture is really country.  You know when I’m in New York, the girls go crazy because I am country when I am singing [laughs].

RC:  What is the greatest lesson you learned from Akon?

RL:  To keep it simple. You don’t always have to over sing a song. “Kon” would say, “Ray! You’re singing too much! We’re going to leave that for some more of your records. Let’s party a little bit.”  So on my party records; I’m not singing as much.  I am having fun.  I’m kind of swaggin it out, sort of rapping a little bit.  I learn to also keep my hooks catchy.

RC:  Let’s talk about the new album and being signed to Global Artist Group…

RL:  The new album is fun!  Its creative and it’s gonna be timeless.  I had a great time doing the album. My music spectrum is all over the place.  We just recorded some good music.

RC:  Who would you like to work with in the future?

RL: Cold Play, Maroon Five, R. Kelly, Cee Lo Green and Brandy.  Her voice is a like a treasure.  It reminds me of something that will never happen again.

RC:  You appeared in the reality-dating series, The Ultimate Merger with Omarosa and was literally the last man standing.  What is she really like?

RL: [Laughs] So you want the real story?  I tell you what, Omarosa is not who most people think she is.  She is not a monster.  She is actually a sweet woman.  It’s people that bring that “monster “out of her.  They look for her to be negative because she has a book [The Bitch Switch: Knowing How to Turn it On and Off] and people just walk up to her and say, “Hey Bitch!”  So of course she is going to respond. I on the other hand, got the princess because of the type of guy that I am.  It’s just something about being country that women just love.

Here is Ray Lavender’s latest offering, We Love:
