Pharrell Williams & Janelle Monáe host Atlanta Premiere of ‘Hidden Figures’ [PHOTOS]

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Grammy winning-superstar Pharrell Williams and Grammy nominated-singer turned actress Janelle Monáe hosted a very special Atlanta premiere of their upcoming film “Hidden Figures” on Wednesday night. The advanced screening was held at the Regal Atlantic Station and was followed by a private Soundtrack Listening Party at the Mean Street Music Studios in West Midtown.

“Hidden Figures” tells the true story of mathematicians Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson, who all served as the brains behind America’s race against Russia to put a man in space. The women quickly rose the ranks of NASA and were known as “human computers.” The film features the extraordinary talents of Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe as the legendary trio. It also stars Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge as well as beloved Atlanta actresses Maria Howell, Karan Kendrick and Donna Biscoe.

“Hidden Figures” is based on the upcoming book “Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race” written by Margot Lee Shetterly.  It was shot on various locations throughout the state of Georgia including historic Morehouse College and in the city of Morrow.

A number of celebrities attended the post screening Soundtrack Listening Party including Grammy winning-hip hop star Ludacris, TV, film and stage actress Jasmine Guy, TV and film actor Carl Payne, “Married to Medicine” star Lisa Nicole Carson and her husband Dr. Darren Naugles, hip hop entertainer Jidenna and rapper Big K.R.I.T. The Soundtrack Listening Party was hosted by Atlanta’s own DJ Drama.

“Hidden Figures” is definitely a MUST SEE for the holidays. The film not only tells the untold story of these courageous women but it really speaks to the power and resilience of African-American women. Not only did these divas contribute to the success of the NASA program but they were the forerunners and civil rights pioneers who helped integrate a system that was completely White male driven. I urge everyone to take their little brown girls (and boys) to see this film and witness greatness on the big screen. But more than that, take them to see faces that look like their own and revel in the glory of these unsung heroines. Much respect to Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe for their award deserving performances and much love to Pharrell Williams for putting his “magic touch” on the film’s soundtrack.

FIRST LOOK at UP’s ‘Marry Us for Christmas ‘[PHOTOS]

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

UP has release FIRST LOOK photos from its upcoming original holiday romantic comedy, “Marry Us for Christmas.” It’s a sequel to last year’s “Marry Me for Christmas” and stars Malinda Williams, Karon Riley, Victoria Rowell, and Marques Houston as the Christmas couples. The film also reunites Rowell with her long-time “Young and the Restless” co-star Kristoff St. John.

Malinda Williams with Victoria Rowell

It’s a year after Marci Jewel (Williams) and Blair Kirkland (Riley) declared their love for each other and decided to tie the knot. But as the big day approaches, Marci is so consumed with work that she’s had no time to plan her wedding. To make matters worse, she may have to team up with former assistant/fake fiancé Adam to win a project she’s been vying for – a little tidbit Marci has held back from Blair. But Blair, as it turns out, has a secret of his own. Thanks to years of doing pro bono work for financially-strapped clients, he quickly is running out of cash and might have to accept an offer to work for his longtime nemesis, Marci’s manipulative cousin Preston (Carl Payne). Meanwhile, Marci’s mother Stephanie Chandler Jewel (Rowell) is making some rather bold moves of her own with her sexy salsa teacher, Antonio Simpson (Houston), who is more than a little smitten with her — and about 20 years her junior. Will there be a wedding for Christmas? Better yet – whose wedding will it be? Naturally, the festivities wouldn’t be complete without family, including Marci’s Uncle Donald (GregAlan Williams), Aunt Myra (DeEtta West), Aunt Elizabeth (Chrystale Wilson), Charlene (Dawn Halfkenny) and Antonio’s uncle Lawrence Simpson (St. John).

Victoria Rowell with Marques Houston

Produced by Atlanta-based Swirl Films, the film is directed by first-time director Drue Powell from a screenplay by executive producer Rhonda Freeman-Baraka (UP’s Marry Me for Christmas and Trinity Goodheart). “Marry US for Christmas” make its world television premiere on UP on Sunday, December 7 at 7:00 p.m. EST / 6:00 p.m. PST.

ATL Stars attend Exclusive Screening of ‘Drumline: A New Beat’ [PHOTOS]

l to r: Lisa Arrindell Anderson, BLFF’s Kathleen Bertrand and Jasmine Burke

Written by | Ray Cornelius

Thursday night the BronzeLens Film Festival hosted an exclusive premiere for the highly anticipated VH1 Original movie, Drumline: A New Beat.  The red carpet screening took place in Atlanta at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema and was attended by the film’s director Bille Woodruff and cast members Lisa Arrindell Anderson, Jasmine Burke and Big Tigger.  Also in attendance were Renee Lawless (The Have and The Have Nots), Chanita Foster (Football Wives), Keshia Knight-Pulliam, John Grant (100 Black Men Atlanta), Rob Hayes (model), Carl Payne (Martin) and Don Roberts, executive band coordinator.

Drumline: A New Beat  stars Alexandra Shipp as Danielle (Dani) Bolton an upper-class Brooklyn girl who defies her parents in order to attend Atlanta A&T so she can join – and revitalize – their once-prominent drumline. Dani’s quest to become the first female section leader of the drumline in the school’s history will be hampered by upperclassmen (including her cousin, Tyree); her feelings for fellow band mate and rival, Jayven; and the school’s crosstown rivals. Rounding out the cast is Letoya LuckettJordan CallowayJeff PierreLeonard Roberts and Scott Shilstone. Executive producer, Nick Cannon makes a cameo appearance as his memorable character, Devon Miles.

Jasmine with Carl Payne

Carl Payne and Jasmine Burke

For actress Jasmine Burke, starring in the sequel is a full circle moment considering she was an extra in the original film. “This is amazing especially because I was an extra in Drumline. Fast forward to ten years later and I’m co-starring in Drumline 2. It’s been both nostalgic and inspiring all at the same time,” said Burke.

Drumline: A New Beat  was initially supposed to be shot in New Orleans.  However, director Bille Woodruff wanted to bring the story back to Atlanta, giving the sequel a direct connection to the first movie.

Close up bille

“I switched locations because I really wanted to shoot the film in Atlanta. (LOL) I love the ATL and wanted the sequel to feel a lot like the first film. I also wanted people to see some familiar places like, ‘OMG, that’s the same band room.’ I also shot scenes in the same Quad area too. I did do some new things as well but I really wanted a strong connection to the first film and I believe I achieved that,” said Woodruff.

Drumline: A New Beat airs this Monday, October 27 at 9p.m. on VH1
