Despite everyone’s opinion about Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ beating out Kendrick Lamar during last Sunday night’s Grammy Awards, the west coast rapper himself is actually saying quite the opposite.

According to an exclusive interview with XXL, Lamar expressed that the duos’ Grammy sweep was actually “well deserved.” Apparently, Lamar has no beef toward his white rap counterparts who took home four hip-hop awards including “Best Rap Song” and “Best Rap Album.” “He did what he did, man. He went out there and hustled and grinded,” stated Lamar.

There has been a lot of debate over why Lamar didn’t win any awards despite being nominated seven times. Even soul singer, India.Arie penned an open letter to the Grammy Committee, claiming that Lamar was robbed and that the show is not about the real talent but ratings.  For Lamar, his lose is a part of life’s ups and downs. “Everything happens for a reason,”  stated Lamar. “The universe comes back around. That’s how it go.”

Lamar did, however, speak up about hip-hop’s lack of representation on the Grammy committee:

“I definitely feel like they should always have more of the culture up in there, for sure, because we definitely stand out just like any other genre,”  Kendrick said when asked if he thought the Grammys undervalued hip-hop. “We part of the world. We part of the movement. So I think any awards, including the Grammys, should always push for more hip-hop because it’s music as a whole, it’s not just splitting different regions. Everything moves as far as sound and vibrations, and that’s how it goes. And we are a part of that.”
