The Academy Award nominations were just announced and 12 Years A Slave  received a total of nine nods including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Michael Fassbender), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Lupita Nyong’o), and Best Directing (Steve McQueen). The film also received nods in Costume Design, Film Editing, Production Design and Writing.

Other notable nominees include Somalian actor Barkhad Abdi for his role in Captain Phillips and hip-hop producer/star Pharrell Williams for his song “Happy” from the animated film DESPICABLE ME 2; it’s up for Best Music Original song. The documentary, 20 Feet from Stardom  also received a nod for Best Documentary feature. As previously reported, this was the film about the untold stories of famed background singers Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, Merry Clayton, Táta Vega, The Waters and Judith Hill.

Surprisingly, Lee Daniels’ The Butler  and Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station did not receive a single nomination. This was pretty upsetting considering the rave reviews and other awards the film’s directors and lead actors (Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey and Michael B. Jordan) have already received. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom  stars Idris Elba and Naomi Harris were also shut out of the nominations. However, U2’s song from the film, “Ordinary Love” is up for  Best Music Original Song.
