Check out these first look images of Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in the film adaptation of August Wilson‘s classic drama, “Fences.” THR debuted them on Friday and says that the film is being released through Paramount and not HBO as had been previously reported. “Fences” will also premiere in theaters on Christmas Day (December 25).

“Fences” is the sixth drama in Wilson’s ten-part “Pittsburgh Cycle.” It focuses on Troy, a 53-year-old head of household who struggles with providing for his family and explores the African-American experience and race relations in the 1950’s. It won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1987 Tony Award for Best Play. The original production starred veteran actors James Earl Jones, Mary Alice, Ray Aranha, Frankie R. Faison and Courtney B. Vance.

This new adaptation features Washington and Davis along with Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson and Stephen McKinley Henderson, who will reprise their roles from the 2010 Broadway production. Also on board are Todd Black and Scott Rudin, who produced the 2010 Tony winning show.

As previously mentioned, Washington has teamed up with the Wilson estate to direct the late playwright’s classic works. “Fences” is one of ten that will be featured on big and small screens.
