CONGRATS to gospel music icon BeBe Winans! His musical “Born For This: The BeBe Winans Story” is offically headed to Broadway. I got a chance to chat briefly with him on the red carpet during Thursday night’s BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards when he shared the exclusive news with my radio show #UPFRONT.
“Born For This: The BeBe Winans Story” is a two-hour musical that follows gospel singing brother and sister duo, BeBe and CeCe Winans as they join Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s Praise The Lord (PTL) Network television show. The Winans teenagers become not only television celebrities, they also become like adopted children of the Bakkers, integrating TV evangelism in Pineville, North Carolina. As BeBe and CeCe encounter fame, fortune, and even a young Whitney Houston, BeBe must learn to balance his desire for success with his true calling.
The show debuted as part of Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre 2016 Season and featured the next generation of Winans singers – Juan and Deborah Joy Winans as BeBe and CeCe along with Kirstin Wyatt as Tammy Faye Bakker, Chaz Pofahl as Jim Bakker, Nita Whitaker as Mom Winans, Milton Craig Nealy as Pop Winans and Kiandra Richardson as Whitney Houston.
Unfortunately Winans didn’t give me any details about when or where the show will debut. However, RC will keep you posted as it continues to develop. “Born For This: The BeBe Winans Story” was co-written by Winans and Charles Randolph-Wright, director of “Motown the Musical.”
Stay tuned…
