Deadline is reporting that Tyler Perry is gearing up to co-produce an apartheid drama about slain American scholar Amy Biehl titled “The Year of the Great Storm.”

The project recounts Biehl’s brutal murder in 1993 by a mob of black South African youth at the height of apartheid. Her parents decided to attend the trials of their daughter’s killers and remained in South Africa where they began a grassroots effort to bring about change in the movement.

“We’re thrilled to be tackling this difficult but inspiring subject matter with an incredible director, writer and team of karzan_kaderproducers,” said Ozzie Areu, President of Tyler Perry Studios. “The story of the Biehl family’s journey is one of courage, compassion and redemption, and we are humbled that they have allowed us unfettered access to bring their lives to the big screen.”

Perry will co-produce the film alongside Doug Liman, Matt Moore, Russ  Stratton and Johanna Baldwin. The film will be executive produced by Liman and George C. Wolfe.
