If you’re in the mood for some real music, then Sonya Hensley has exactly what you need! The multi-talented singer, actress, dancer, and Broadway performer has dropped her very first album of jazz and blues standards that pays homage to such music greats as Les Paul, Leonard Feather, and Lena Horne.
The Essential Sonya Hensley features her signature vocals on such classics as “Over the Rainbow,” “Evil Gal Blues,” “This Bitter Earth,” and my personal favorites Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood” and “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” popularized by the late, great Nina Simone. She also adds her own stylish flair to Carol King’s “You Gotta A Friend,” “C’est La Baby” “Moondance,” and “Born On A Friday (Unlucky Woman Blues).”
Hensley says, “I feel like the album is a way of paying homage to and carrying on the extraordinary gifts and legacies of those who have inspired my musical journey. Les is gone, Lena is gone, as are many jazz composers… To me, this record completes a whole era for me and fulfills a promise, allowing me now to move on to recording more of the original material I have been writing over the years.”
