View  co-host Whoopi Goldberg appeared on a Dutch Public television show earlier this year and apparently the video is still making its rounds on the world wide web. During the discussion, the multi-award winning actress was asked about some of her greatest achievements and she mentioned playing Guinan on Star Trek: The Next Generation.  Whoopi says that she took the role to prove that black people “existed” in the future.

“Doing Star Trek…that made me incredibly happy. Without Star Trek, people would still think there were no black people in the future.”

Whoopi went on to explain that it bothered her as a child not seeing African-American images on television in space until Star Trek came along in 1963 with its first black female character Lt. Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols.

Whoopi was later surprise by a fan who expressed how her character on the show changed his life. Moved by his comments, Whoopi walked out in the audience and gave him a big hug and kiss.
