BET is reporting that Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill will face up to three months in prison for tax evasion.
Despite having just paid $500,000 to the IRS for her past state and federal tax bill, the ex-Fugee star was sentenced on Monday to serve three months in jail and an additional three months in home confinement. Initially she was supposed to serve three years but received a reduced sentence from the judge. Hill pleaded guilty last year of failing to pay her taxes and expressed her views to the judge in an online blog post.
Hill told U.S Magistrate Madeline Cox Arleo yesterday that she stopped filling her taxes around the time she withdrew from the entertainment industry to protect and raise her six children. She claims unfair treatment in the industry forced her to leave.
“There were veiled threats, there was blacklisting,” she said, without giving specifics. “I was told, `That’s how it goes, it comes with the territory.’ I came to be perceived as a cash cow and not a person. When people capitalize on a persona, they forget there is a person in there.”
According to AP News, Hill will report to prison by July 8 even though it’s not clear where she will serve her time. On a brighter note, Ms. Hill is said to be very eager to getting back to her music and has a new recording contract with Sony Records. She also released a new single last weekend entitled Neurotic Society, click here to listen.
