ESSENCE is reporting that actress Alexandra Shipp has been cast in the role of Aaliyah Haughton for the upcoming Lifetime biopic, Aaliyah: R&B Princess.  The announcement comes on the heels of former Disney star Zendaya  Coleman pulling out of the project. She left amidst complaints from the singer’s fans and the Haughton family threatening to block the network from acquiring rights to Aaliyah songs.

Shipp has appeared in such shows as Awkward, House of Anubis  and will star in Nick Cannon’s upcoming sequel to Drumline.  Also joining the film’s production team is award-winning talk show host, Wendy Williams.  She will serve as executive producer alongside producer Debra Martin Chase and confirmed recently that shooting will begin later on this month.
