Bill Cosby to receive Johnny Carson Award at American Comedy Awards

America’s favorite dad, Bill Cosby, is being honored with the prestigious Johnny Carson Award for Comedic Excellence at this year American Comedy Awards. The show will air on May 8 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.

According to IndieWire.com, the award is presented to “an individual who, over the course of their lifetime, has made an extraordinary contribution to comedy and whose impact and innovations have changed the landscape and inspired future generations of entertainers.”

“Bill Cosby is an iconic figure at the forefront of the American comedy landscape,” said Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Late Night Programming, NBC Entertainment. “His work in television, film, stand-up comedy and literature has shaped the national sense of humor and has had an enduring impact on comedians and fans of all ages. We are delighted to honor him with the Johnny Carson Award during NBC’s inaugural broadcast of the ‘American Comedy Awards.”

Cosby is best known for ground breaking performance on the television drama, I Spy  as well as his Emmy-winning cartoon, Fat Albert and his hugely popular 80’s sitcom, The Cosby Show.

The telecast will also recognize other comedic trailblazers who have made indelible contributions to entertainment as well as newcomers who have crossed over into television and film success.
