I recently had an opportunity to chat with singer-songwriter Monica about reuniting with her friend, Brandy for their new single, It All Belongs to Me. The reality star and fashion maven was excited about their collaboration and both of their new albums.
On working with Brandy again…
“It’s been fun. We have a lot more in common. We both have children. We both have our aspirations. We have the struggles in the midst and I think our friendship allowed us to sit back and really evaluate what type of song we wanted. How different it should be from the first song and so forth. We really didn’t want people to think, we’re trying to create a sequel or continuation of The Boy Is Mine. We were not going to mess with the history of what that song was; so there is no comparison between the two.”
On the video concept…
“This video in particular was really fun because in the first song, we were at each other’s throat and this one is more about empowering each other and coming together. Brandy always calls it our ‘Thelma and Louise’ moment; so even while shooting the video we had a great time.”
On the new album, New Life…
“I’m really excited about it. I’m working with Wale and Polow da Don is the executive producer and of course, Missy Elliott and I always work together as well as Jermaine Dupri. So, I kept that close group of people that I know well that would understand my journey and that can talk about what this album is all about. New Life is a follow up to Still Standing and drops April 10th. Brandy’s album 2/11 comes out in June, so were both elated!”
