Tony-winning Broadway diva Cynthia Erivo is taking on the role of abolitionist and activist Harriet Tubman. The film project will be directed by Kasi Lemmons and produced by Debra Chase Martin and her Martin Chase Production Company.
According to S&A, Harriet follows Tubman on her escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free dozens of slaves through the Underground Railroad in the face of growing pre-Civil War adversity.
Joining Erivo in Harriet are Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles and Clarke Peters. The screenplay was co-written by Lemmons and Gregory Allen Howard.
Erivo most recently appeared on BET’s Black Girls Rock as part of the musical tribute to the late Aretha Franklin. Also look for her in Widows along with Viola Davis.
