DEADLINE is reporting that The Chi‘s Jason Mitchell is set to appear alongside Trevor Jackson in a remake of the classic 70s blaxploitation film “Superfly.” Director X will serve as the project’s director.
“Superfly” follows Priest, a New York City drug dealer who decides that he wants to get out of his dangerous trade. Working with his reluctant friend, Eddie, Priest devises a scheme that will allow him make a big deal and then retire. Jackson will portray Priest and Mitchell will star as Eddie. Rounding out the cast is Lex Scott Davis as Georgia, Andrea Londo as Cynthia, Jacob Ming-Trent as Fat Freddy, and Omar Chapparo as Adalberto. 21 Savage and KiaShine are also attached to the film.
“When I went back and watched the original, I was struck by how relevant the themes are,” said Director X. “The pursuit of the American Dream is eternal – everyone’s always on the hustle, because you’ve got to be… and Superfly is about pulling off the ultimate hustle to get out of the game. Our goal is to make it modern – to make a movie where the style, the art direction, the camera movements are all part of what makes the movie Superfly. With this film, my goal is to honor the lineage of an iconic title that the community has loved for decades.”
Hip hop star Future is on board to curate the film’s soundtrack along with rap producer Zaytoven. The late Curtis Mayfield produced the original film’s soundtrack.
Alex Tse will write the script and the film is executive produced by Future along with Joel Silver, Steven R. Shore, Matthew Hirsch, Hal Sadoff and Aaron Auch.
