The life and music of legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane is coming to U.S. theaters via a new documentary film titled, “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary.”
Written and directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker, John Scheinfield, “Chasing Trane” is an extraordinary project about one of the most iconic jazz musicians of all time, John Coltrane and is told by those artists who knew him the best and admired him the most.
The film is narrated by two-time Oscar winning actor Denzel Washington and features never-before-seen Coltrane family home movies, footage of him and his band in the studio (discovered in a California garage during production of this film), along with hundreds of never-before-seen photographs and rare television appearances from around the world.
It also features appearances by those who worked with him and were influenced by his musical artistry including Sonny Rollins, Common, Wynton Marsalis, Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter and Kamasi Washington. It also includes cameos by President Bill Clinton and philosopher Dr. Cornel West.
“Chasing Trane” will open in theaters across the country beginning April 14 at NYC’s IFC and just in time for Jazz Appreciation Month (J.A.M). It will continue through Black Music Month in June with screenings in Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Philadelphia and San Fransisco.
