The Georgia Ensemble Theatre is celebrating Black History Month this February with the theatrical production of “Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years” starring Atlanta actresses Donna Biscoe and Brenda Porter.
The show is based on the 1995 Broadway play by Emily Mann and follows 103-year-old Sadie and 101-year-old Bessie Delany as they recount fascinating stories, anecdotes and events from their rich family history. The show is running now through March 5 and is directed by “If Loving You is Wrong” actress—Andrea Frye.
The Delany Sisters were first brought to our attention as the subject of a 1991 New York Times interview written by Amy Hill Hearth. The sisters would go on to become overnight sensations inspiring both the book and play of the same name, “Having Our Say.” The theatrical production was also the inspiration behind the 1999 CBS made-for-television movie starring the late Ruby Dee and Diahann Carroll.
