If you were a fan of the comedy series, “Everybody Hates Chris,” then you’ll remember his nagging little sister, Tonya, who was played by child starlet Imani Hakim. She was always in cahoots with Chris’ other brother, Drew and couldn’t wait to throw him under the bus…literally.
Well, Hakim is all grown up now and has landed herself a more mature role in the new Netflix HBCU film, “Burning Sands.” As previously reported, the movie is centered around a particularly brutal hazing process at an all-black university. A favored pledgee is torn between honoring his code of silence or standing up against the intensifying violence of underground hazing.
Hakim will play Rochon, the love interest to Trevor Jackson‘s Zurich. She’ll be joining other previously announced cast members: Alfre Woodard (“Luke Cage”), Steve Harris (“Legends”), Tosin Cole (“Hollyoaks”), DeRon Horton, Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Christian Robinson, Rotimi (“Power”), Octavius Johnson, Malik Bazille, Mitchell Edwards, Serayah (“Empire”) and Nafessa Williams (“Brotherly Love”).
Oscar winning-hip hop star, actor and activist, Common is the executive producer of the film through his Freedom Road Productions and even penned an original song, “The Cross” featuring the UK’s Lianne La Havas.
“Burning Sands” will premiere on Netflix on March 10, 2017.
