In tonight’s episode of “Iyanla Fix My Life,” she works with Marie Holmes, a mother of four, whose life is in shambles after winning $188 million in a lotto jackpot. She spent millions to bail her fiancé out of jail, and with his 10-year sentence just 48 hours away, Iyanla helps Marie cope with her life before she loses it all.
One day, Marie Holmes was a Wal-Mart worker struggling to care for her four children; the next day, she was a multimillionaire. After winning $188 million in the lottery in 2015, Marie’s life changed drastically—and not all of it has been good.
Iyanla says she can relate to experiencing rapid success, and sympathizes with the single mother in that respect. “Coming from nothing into something almost overnight, that’s traumatic,” Iyanla says.
Marie agrees, but she says that she still feels as if she’s the same person that she was before she won the Powerball jackpot.
“No, no, no, no, no,” Iyanla tells her. “Before you won the lottery, you were the mother of four working in Wal-Mart. You are not that person, baby.”
Because Marie has lacked the guidance and support in transitioning from her old life to her new one, it is Iyanla’s intention to help Marie learn how to adjust. “You’ve got to go from being poor, which is a physical state, to being wealthy, which is a state of mind,” Iyanla says.
