Congrats to Ava DuVernay and the cast of “Queen Sugar.” The new original drama from the award winning-filmmaker has already been renewed for a second season ahead of its September premiere.

According to the press release, OWN has ordered 16-episodes for the second season. “Queen Sugar,” is based on the book of the same name and follows the lives and loves of three estranged siblings, who inherit an 800-acre sugarcane farm in the heart of Louisiana. It stars Rutina Wesley, Dawn Lyen-Gardner, Kofi Siriboe, Tina Lifford, Omar J Dorsey, Dondre Whitfield and is executive produced by Oprah Winfrey.

“Queen Sugar” will debut commercial free on Tuesday, September 6 followed by Wednesday, September 7 at 10 p.m. EST. It will air regularly on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET for the remainder of its 13-episode first season.

“When we saw the first cut from Ava we knew right away that we wanted a second season,” said Erik Logan, president, OWN. “We think viewers are going to connect with the deeply layered characters and powerful story and are excited to be able to share with them Ava’s director’s cut on premiere night without interruption. We are proud to be a network that supports a filmmaker’s creative vision.”
