Congrats to actress Tika Sumpter and acclaimed attorney Judy Smith. Both ladies were inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® (AKA) on Sunday during the 67th Annual Boule in Atlanta, GA.
Sumpter is best known for her role as ‘Candace’ on Tyler Perry‘s hugely popular OWN series “The Haves and the Have Nots.” She has also appeared on BET’s “The Game,” HBO’s “Bessie,” “Ride Along” and “Sparkle” with the late Whitney Houston. Her latest project is titled “Southside with You” and she will portray Michelle Obama. It opens in theatres on August 26.
Smith is a world-renowned crisis manager, communications executive, author and litigator. She has spent the last 25 years providing strategic advice to corporations, politicians, entertainers, sports figures and foreign governments. She is also Co-Executive Producer of and inspiration behind Kerry Washington‘s character ‘Olivia Pope’ on the hit series “Scandal.”
The ladies were also joined by Breast Cancer Champion Karen Eubanks Jackson, Ambassador Susan Denise Page and U.S. Deputy Surgeon General Sylvia Trent-Adams. Other honorary members include Gladys Knight, Alicia Keys, Lynn Whitfield, Brandy Norwood, Ella Fitzgerald and Marla Gibbs.
“Honorary Membership is bestowed upon women with high ethical standards who have received international recognition for outstanding achievement,” said International President Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, L.H.D.. “Each of this year’s inductees have demonstrated remarkable strength and perseverance to achieve her goals and have a positive impact on the world around her. Most importantly, these women have done so with a commitment to serving others, a hallmark of Alpha Kappa Alpha.”
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) is an international service organization that was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African-American college-educated women.
