The stars of “Barbershop: The Next Cut” were honored Thursday night with Atlanta’s prestigious Pheonix Award at the premiere of their new film. Ice Cube and Cedric the Entertainer were given the awards by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed at the beginning of the screening for their part in contributing to the growth of Atlanta’s film community.
A bevy of Atlanta stars were also in attendance including actress and singer Demetria McKinney and reality stars Gocha Hawkins, Beautii J and Sherée Whitfield. Also spotted on the carpet were football stars Edwin Jackson, Lavon Hooks and Chris Douglas, celebrity hairstylists Derek J and Ming Lee and music executive Kawan “KP” Prather as well as teen music sensation Silento and actor Jamal Woodard. Comedienne and media personality Wanda Smith served as host for the evening.
In “Barbershop: The Next Cut” the once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed. The ladies bring their own flavor, drama and gossip to the shop challenging the fellas at every turn. Despite the good times and camaraderie within the shop, the surrounding community has taken a turn for the worse, forcing Calvin and our crew to come together to not only save the shop, but their neighborhood.
“Barbershop: The Next Cut” also stars Eve, Nicki Minaj, Patrick Thomas, Anthony Anderson, Jaszmine Lewis, and JB Smoove. It is directed by Malcolm Lee with a screenplay by “black-ish” creator Kenya Barris and “The Neighbors” Tracy Oliver.
