The stars of “Barbershop: The Next Cut” made a surprise visit recently to Chicago’s Urban Prep Academies for their 2017 college acceptance announcements. Ice Cube, Common, Regina Hall, Cedric the Entertainer and Deon Cole were on hand to celebrate these astounding young men as they have 100% college acceptance for 6 consecutive years.

Urban Prep Academies is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates a network of all-boys public schools including the country’s first charter high school for boys. Urban Prep’s mission is to provide a high-quality and comprehensive college-preparatory educational experience to young men that results in our graduates succeeding in college. The schools are a direct response to the urgent need to reverse abysmal graduation and college completion rates among boys in urban centers. While most of Urban Prep students come to the schools from economically disadvantaged households and behind in many subject areas, Urban Prep remains committed to preparing all of its students for college and life.

In “Barbershop: The Next Cut” the once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed. The ladies bring their own flavor, drama and gossip to the shop challenging the fellas at every turn. Despite the good times and camaraderie within the shop, the surrounding community has taken a turn for the worse, forcing Calvin and our crew to come together to not only save the shop, but their neighborhood.

“Barbershop: The Next Cut” also stars Eve, Nicki Minaj, Patrick Thomas, Anthony Anderson, Jaszmine Lewis, and JB Smoove. It is directed by Malcolm Lee with a screenplay by “black-ish” creator Kenya Barris and “The Neighbors” Tracy Oliver.
