Check out the first trailer for the The History Channel’s adaptation of the 1970’s classic television series “Roots.” The series stars Forest Whitaker, Anika Noni Rose, Mekhi Phifer, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Laurence FishburneTip ‘T.I.’ Harris and premieres Memorial Day Weekend 2016.

“Roots” is based on Alex Haley‘s iconic book about his American family origin story and is inspired by the life of Kunta Kinte. It is also being produced by Will Packer along with original “Roots” star LeVar Burton.

Other stars attached to project include James Purefoy, Anna Paquin, Matthew Goode, G. Hannelius, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Chad L. Colman, Erica Tazel, Derek Luke, and newcomers Malachi Kirby and Regé-Jean Page.

“Roots” is an eight-hour event miniseries that will air over four nights and will simulcast on A&E and Lifetime. The original series aired in 1977 and is the second most watched overall series finale in U.S. television history.
