Deadline is reporting that entertainment mogul Tyler Perry will host a special televised musical event based on The Passion of the Christ just before Easter on Fox. The two-hour musical, simply known as The Passion, will air live from 8-10 p.m. EST on March 20.
Reportedly, the story will be set in modern times and will feature top-rated entertainers. The show will also include a procession of hundreds of people carrying a 20-foot, illuminated cross from Champion Square to the live stage at Woldenburg Park on the banks of the Mississippi River. The elaborate show is being produced by Conference – Day 2nt.
“The Passion is both wonderfully entertaining and genuinely inspirational,” said Fox Entertainment president David Madden. “Tyler Perry is the perfect host to lead the cast – and viewers – through the streets of New Orleans in this contemporary re-telling of a timeless story.”
It appears that Fox is capitalizing on the popularity of bible-based programming and the recent success of NBC’s highly-rated musical, The Wiz Live. Tyler Perry couldn’t be a more perfect host considering he’s a New Orleans native and he has a huge faith-based following.
