OMG! One of the my favorite ole-school movies is getting a much needed remake! ABC and Lionsgate TV announced Tuesday that they are gearing up for new Dirty Dancing special. According to the press release, the televised program is a three-hour event with filmed song and dance performances. It is also an adaptation of the beloved 1987 hit romantic drama and instant movie classic.
Dirty Dancing follows a young woman named ‘Baby’, who vacations with her affluent parents and siblings in the Catskill Mountains and falls for the resort’s working-class dance instructor. Academy Award®-nominated actress, singer and author Abigail Breslin will star in the lead role which was so famously played by Jennifer Grey.
Dirty Dancing was a global pop culture phenomenon that made a sex symbol out of its leading man, the late Patrick Swayze during the late 80’s and early 90’s. The film also spawned a sold-out music tour featuring artists on the soundtrack followed by a stage adaptation and 2004 re-imagined film version titled Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.
The original soundtrack generated two multi-platinum albums and the single “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” won the Golden Globe® and Academy Award® for Best Original Song, as well as a Grammy® for Best Duet.
Dirty Dancing is executive produced by Allison Shearmur and written by Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie.
Check out one of my favorites songs below from the film’s original soundtrack. The song is titled”Yes” and is performed by legendary 20 Feet from Stardom singer-songwriter Merry Clayton.
