Congrats to my friend Gil Robertson and The African-American Film Critics Association (AFFCA). The Los Angeles-based organization teamed up with ESSENCE this week for a celebration honoring the Black Women of James Bond films.
The VIP gala took place in advance of the North American release of the 007 film Spectre and was attended by four generations of iconic women including Trina Parks (Diamonds Are Forever), Gloria Hendry (Live and Let Die), Halle Berry (Die Another Day) and Naomie Harris (Skyfall, Spectre). Grace Jones, who appeared in 1985’s A View to A Kill, was not present but was also acknowledged.
The evening, which was held at the California African-American Museum, also featured exclusive photos of the women shot by acclaimed photographer Kwaku Alston. ESSENCE also unveiled Naomie Harris’ new December cover. She is the first Black actress to star as Eve MoneyPenny, the secretary to Bond’s boss and head of the British Secret Service.
The Black Women of Bond tribute was part of a collaborative effort between AAFCA, ESSENCE, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Columbia Pictures & Terry Hines and Associates’ (THA) urban divisions.
