Every now and again Hollywood releases a movie that speaks to what really matters in all of our lives like faith, family and friends. These films are often peppered with inspirational messages, unforgettable movie lines and heartfelt anecdotes that if were not careful we’ll miss because of all the other stuff going on in it. While some of these projects are not necessarily labeled “faith-based,” there are just enough spiritual nuances infused in them for your pastor to feel comfortable enough referencing it in his or her next sermon.

Well folks, The Martian is one of those films.

Oscar winning-actor Matt Damon stars as “Mark Watney,” a U.S. astronaunt on a Mars mission, who is presumed dead after a fierce storm separates him from his crew and he is left behind on the red planet. Lucky for him, he survives the storm but now finds himself alone with limited food and water supplies. Armed with his intelligence, some out dated NASA equipment and his faith in God, Mark finds a way to signal to Earth that he is alive and his journey to get back home begins.

It’s during this time alone in the film that we [the audience] see the character’s faith in action. From finding a solution to growing food to figuring out how to use nuclear energy as a source of heat, Damon does an exceptional job of conveying the spiritual principle that “all things are possible to those who believe.” The film’s underlying theme also drives home the point that “no matter where we find ourselves in life—be it on earth or in outer space—God is always there leading and guiding us.”

In closing, going to see The Martian is more than just watching another film but its about being apart of an experience. It’s also a gentle reminder that life is journey and that no matter how hard we try, we’ll never be fully prepared for what it may bring. However, if we stay open to new encounters and know that even in the face of insurmountable circumstances, the possibilities of experiencing a greater outcome are endless!

Now who says that Jesus and science don’t mix?  Check out the trailer below and catch The Martian at a theater near you!
