S&A is reporting that a stage production about the iconic music/variety show, Soul Train is coming to Broadway.
Reportedly, Rock of Ages producer Matthew Weaver has acquired the theatrical rights to the “Soul Train” franchise from Earvin “Magic” Johnson and plans to bring it New York audiences in the near future.
“Don Cornelius created a television show that became a cornerstone in American culture and I am excited and honored to be bringing it to the stage,” said Weaver. “We are putting together a top-notch team of artists to ensure Soul Train is the hippest trip on Broadway.”
The production will focus on the show’s creator, Don Cornelius, who passed away in 2012, as well as the numerous musical guests that appeared on the show throughout its 35-year history. I’m sure it will also highlight the hugely popular “Scrabble Game” and the World Famous Soul Train dancers, whose alumni include Shalamar’s Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel as well as acclaimed actress, Rosie Perez.
“Soul Train has made a significant impact on American music and pop culture and its legacy and appeal continue to resonate around the world,” added Johnson. “Creating a live theatrical interpretation of this iconic franchise is an opportunity that could not be missed.”
In the words of the late Don Cornelius…”You can bet your last money, it’s all gonna be a stone gas, honey!”
Stay tuned…
