“Selma” actor Wendell Pierce has been tapped to portray U.S. Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas in the upcoming HBO project, “Confirmation.” The drama examines 1991 debacle when Judge Thomas’ nomination to the United States’ Supreme Court is called into question over accusations that sexually harassed former colleague and attorney, Anita Hill. “Scandal” star Kerry Washington will play Hill and will also serve as the film’s executive producer. Rick Famuyiwa of “Dope” fame is on board to direct. Filming begins this summer. [INDIEWIRE]
Oscar nominated-actress and “How To Get Away With Murder” star Viola Davis will play slave abolitionist, Harriet Tubman, in an HBO project. The film is based on the Tubman biography “Bound for the Promised Land: Harriett Tubman” by historian Kate Clifford Larson. No word yet on when the project will air or who else is starring in the film. Tubman is an American history icon who was instrumental in freeing slaves through a network of secret routes and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. [USATODAY]
Oscar winning rapper and actor, Common has picked up another film project. The “Selma” star will join the cast of “Barbershop 3.” The film is the third installment to the “Barbershop” franchise and is slated to be directed by Malcolm Lee. Also on board are the film’s original stars Ice Cube and Cedric The Entertainer. As previously reported, Common will also star in “Being Charlie,” “Chiraq” and “Suicide Squad.” [EW]
