The National Black Art Festival (NBAF) hosted its 9th Annual Fine Art + Fashion Benefit last night at Atlanta’s Neiman Marcus – Lenox Mall. The VIP event was hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist and WXIA New Anchor, Brenda Woods and recognized the philanthropic efforts of Fine Art + Fashion Honorary Co-Chairs, Darrell Mays and Jack Sawyer.

Fashion Designer, Azede Jean-Pierre honored three Atlanta based designer as part of the NBAF Emerging Talent Awards including Salimi Akil, Austin J. Nelson and Jessica Lache Fulks. The awards were established in 2010 to recognize student fashion designers of African descent who have distinguished themselves for their academic achievement, talent, creativity and cutting edge and innovative approach. Each of the designers’ work will be displayed in the Neiman Marcus windows along with a cash prize.

Also recognized was artist, writer and film critic, Amalia Amaki, who received this year’s coveted Visual Artist Award. Amaki was acknowledged for her groundbreaking work that redefines the lives of past and present African-American heroines and heroes and contrast their depiction in the mainstream media.

Following the award presentations was the “Art of Fashion” featuring recent runway looks handpicked by Senior Vice President and Fashion Director for Neiman Marcus, Ken Downing. The 70’s inspired show included a variety of Bohemian Chic looks that had attendees screaming with excitement.  After the show, everyone enjoyed decadent desserts, champagne and live jazz music.
