Congrats to platinum selling artist and stage actress Deborah Cox. The multi-talented singer-songwriter has inked a deal to play the legendary Josephine Baker in a new show for Sarasota, Florida’s Asolo Repertory Theatre. The show is titled, “JOSEPHINE” and will begin previews in April 2016.

According to the press release, “JOSEPHINE” is based on Stephen Papich’s book “Remembering Josephine,” and chronicles Baker’s stint as the star of the Folies Bergere in Paris between 1939-45, her scandalous affair with Swedish Crown Prince Gustav VI, and her heroic service in the French Resistance during World War II.

“We are excited to present the world premiere of this extraordinary original musical, brimming with unparalleled Broadway talent,” said Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards. “JOSEPHINE vividly brings to life the story of a beloved American icon – one of the most magnetic and fascinating women in history. This celebration of Josephine Baker is a remarkably evocative work of art and a brilliant addition to our five-year American Character Project.”

Baker was the first Black global female superstar and sex symbol. She rose to fame from humble beginnings during the 1920’s to become the toast of Paris, France. She was also dubbed the “Nefertiti of Now” by Picasso and Ernest Hemingway called her “the most sensational woman anyone ever saw.”

Award winning actress Lynn Whitfield, won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Baker in the award-winning HBO biopic, “The Josephine Baker Story.”  In 2013, we reported that pop star Rihanna was being considered for another film adaptation of the Baker’s story.
