It’s often been said that “art imitates life” and for singer and “Empire” star, V. Bozeman, that statement could not be truer. The Los Angeles native, who blew us all away with her song “What Is Love,” is gearing up to release not one but two new projects this year and can’t wait to bring her unique sound to the radio airwaves. Much like her character on the hit Fox show, Bozeman has been putting the finishing touches on her work with super music producer, Timbaland.
“My character Veronica and I are so similar. I relate to her in every single way. She’s just an artist that wants to win and she is not going to let anything get in her way, whether it’s Lucious, whether it’s Cookie, whether it’s her mom, anybody or anything that steps in her way, there’s going to be issues if it hinders her from reaching her goals. She’s very passionate,” says Bozeman to BET.
Unlike her character on the show, Bozeman is not a neophyte to the industry. She’s already released a few singles including the racially-themed song, “Race Jones” and turned heads in the sensual music video, “Til the End of Time” with soul music singer, Timothy Bloom. In addition to that, she has worked with Babyface and most recently, CeeLo Green, who she says gave her the license to be herself.
“As far as CeeLo, I learned about music and about not being afraid to be free, not taking myself so seriously, really releasing myself to the music and letting it take over, and allowing the creative process to be fun. I’m a very intense person. I’m a Capricorn, so CeeLo helped me just not take myself so seriously and have fun with the experience.”
With a resume that boasts a who’s who of musical titans, Bozeman continues to remain a humble spirit even though she does consider herself to be a ‘diva’ in training.
“No! I’m not a diva but, I mean I wouldn’t mind being a diva in the good sense of the word. Not the stereotypical way. I love Whitney Houston and Patti [LaBelle] and Chaka Khan and of course Aretha [Franklin]. They’re divas. They’ve earned that right. I think I’m a diva in the making.”
