It’s the first month of the New Year and you already know what that means..new television debuts, season premieres and award shows.  This week, I am spotlighting three programs that are sure to be hot topics the next day around the office water cooler.  Check them out below:

The Have and the Have Nots – Tuesday, January 6 at 9 p.m. on OWN

Tyler Perry’s OWN drama, “The Have and the Have Nots” is back for a fiery new season.  As previously reported, viewers last saw judge Jim Cryer (John Schneider) as he was carried away from his mansion in a kidnapping perpetrated by his former mistress (and former captive) Candace Young (Tika Sumpter). Now, “cray cray” Candace wants revenge and money and will stop at nothing to get it. The show airs TONIGHT at 9 p.m. EST on OWN.

EMPIRE – Wednesday, January 7 at 9 p.m. on Fox

Wednesday nights are about to get CRUNK as Fox rolls out is original new series directed by Lee Daniels titled “Empire.” The show follows a family-run-hip-hop dynasty governed by Lucious Lyons (Terrence Howard) who is attempting to take his record company, Empire Entertainment public. His plans to do so are delayed when his ex-wife, Cookie Lyons (Taraji P. Henson) emerges from prison and an all-out family war ensues.  “Empire” also stars Trai Byers, Jussie Smollet and Bryshere Y. Gray and a host of others. It debuts Wednesday, January 7 at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.

The People’s Choice Awards – Wednesday, January 7 at 9 p.m. on CBS

Will it be Beyoncé or Iggy Azalea that walks away with “Favorite Female Artist” at this year’s People’s Choice Awards?  The annual telecast that gives fans a chance to honor their favorite entertainers is back and also airs Wednesday, January 7 at 9 p.m. EST on CBS. Other nominees include Queen Latifah, Steve Harvey, John Legend, Pharrell Williams, Drake, Jay Z, T.I., Nicki Minaj, Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, Usher, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Octavia Spencer and Laurence Fishburne.  Click here to see the full list of nominees.
