Multi-award winning superstar Jennifer Hudson portrayed a Broadway diva on the short-lived NBC drama “Smash.” Now, the überly talented siren will get to play one in real life.  According to Broadwayworld.com, JHud will make her Broadway debut as the feisty blues singer Shug Avery in a revival of “The Color Purple.”
The show is scheduled to hit the stage next fall and will be reworked by John Doyle’s Menier Chocolate Factory. In addition, ESSENCE is reporting that producers are currently talking to British actress Cynthia Erivo to reprise her London role as Miss Celie. It had been originally stated that Hudson would be playing Ms. Celie but that was just a rumor. The show is also be co-produced by Oprah Winfrey’s theatrical business partner, Scott Sanders.
This exciting new opportunity to sing on the Great White Way brings Hudson one step closer to becoming an “EGOT,” a performer that has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.
