Deadline is reporting that Armie Hammer has joined Nate Parker’s new passion project, The Birth of a Nation. The film will chronicle the life of Nat Turner, the African-American slave who led a slave rebellion on August 21, 1831. The revolutionary freed Blacks and slaves that resulted in the deaths of 60 whites. Although he was captured, arrested and hung for his actions, Turner is without a doubt one of the most revered figures in African-American history.
Hammer will play Samuel Turner, the son of Nat’s first master Benjamin Turner. The film ‘s producers include David S. Goyer, Kevin Turen, Nnamdi Asomugha, Jonathan Baker, Jason Michael Berman, Michael Finley, Manu Gargi and Ben Renzo.
The Birth of a Nation will be directed by Parker, who took over a year to write the script. This is the actor’s second project behind the camera. He most recently directed the thought-provoking documentary, AmeriCAN. He is also starring alongside Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Gina Prince Bythewood’s new romantic drama, Beyond the Lights which opens in theaters Friday.
