‘American Race’ to address issue of Black Male Crisis

In light of the recent cases involving young African-American men dying at the hands of police officers, “Beyond the Lights” actor Nate Parker and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg and writer-director, Matthew Cooke, are joining forces to produce a new documentary titled, “American Race.”

The film will examine the on-going “black male crisis” in the U.S. and will pay close attention to the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice and many others. The project, which began in August, will also look at the most recent death of Michael Brown, who was shot several times by Officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, MI. Just last week, a grand jury failed to indict Wilson over the shooting death of Brown, which sparked outrage in Ferguson and caused several riots and protests around the country. Wilson resigned from his post this weekend at the Ferguson Police Department, according to his lawyer.

“In response to the growing problem of racial disparity due to the ongoing dehumanization of black men, actor and activist Nate Parker is setting out on a journey of investigation. He will venture into black communities to speak to various stakeholders about the crisis facing these men. Through the examination of specific cases, Nate will create relevant and responsive discourse with the intention of mining strong and tangible solutions to combat this ever-growing crisis. We will also highlight existing programs that are creating effective and sustainable counter action to the crisis.”

The trio of filmmakers has set up an Indiegogo campaign to raise $25,000 for the film by January 5, 2015.  This is Parker’s second project within the last month addressing this issue. Just a few weeks ago, he released another film titled, “AmeriCAN.”
