Last week we saw Common bring out Mike Brown’s parents in an emotional performance and tribute during the 2014 BET Hip-Hop Awards. Recent tragedies such as the murder of 18-year old Mike Brown have urged artists, such as Common, to speak publicly about the injustices faced by communities in America. This December, we’ll see hip-hop and activism collide on the big screen in Paramount Pictures’ Selma, as Common portrays James Bevel, a leader who spear-headed the monumental 1963 March on Washington and the 1965 Selma Voting Rights Movement.
