It looks like the upcoming Lifetime biopic about Aaliyah Houghton has been placed on the hold. The film’s star Zendaya Coleman has pulled out of the project, prompting producers to halt production. The news was announced on Sunday.
“We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold,” Lifetime wrote in a statement posted on its Twitter account on Sunday. A network rep did not comment further.
As previously reported, Coleman was to play the late singer in a film titled, Aaliyah: Princess of R&B. Filming was to begin this summer with a fall premiere date.
Fans of the Aaliyah expressed their displeasure in the Disney actress playing the fallen star as well as the Houghton family. They’ve said that Aaliyah’s life and career was too big for a small scene film and have threatened the project with legal action.
No word yet on who may be stepping into the role. Both Teyana Taylor and 106 Park co-host Keshia Chanté auditioned for the part. RC will keep you posted as this story continues to develop.
With Zendaya out, who do you think should play Aaliyah?
