One of sport’s biggest nights will be hosted by one of music’s biggest acts. Hip-hop titan Drake is gearing up to emcee the 2014 ESPYs. The multi-talented rapper, singer and actor shared the news this week via Twitter that he would host the annual live broadcast on July 16 at the Nokia Theater L. A.
“Drake is an unbelievably talented entertainer who truly has a passion for sports. We are thrilled to have him to host this year’s show,” said Connor Schell, vice president, ESPN Films and Original Entertainment, in a statement.
The 27-year-old entertainer has always had an affinity for sports. Last year, we reported that he had team up with his home town Toronto Raptors as the league’s new ‘Global Ambassador.’ In preparation of the city presenting the 2016 All-Star Game, Drake was chosen to help re-brand the team’s image. According to Rolling Stone, he has already help launch the Raptor’s clothing line, redesigned the team’s look and appeared in commercials with the players.
Drake has also served as celebrity host for Saturday Night Live and the 2011 Juno Awards. “This is an incredible opportunity for me to combine two of my biggest passions—sports and performing,” said the rapper in a statement.
The ESPYs, raises more than $1 million a year for cancer research and was established in 1993.
Congrats Drake!
